In I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya Angelou makes a statement about the power of names often harm or offend people. She shows many examples in the book on how the names were used in offence or to hurt someone. Although they can sometimes be used in a friendly way and can sometimes stick to that person. She showed this with her name from Bailey. Nicknames can also not mean what they say, they mean the opposite of what they’re supposed to mean. To be called any other name but your own because it was a “convenience” to someone else (108) was an absolute insult. When Mrs. Cullinan called Marguerite “Mary”, it offended her to have her name shortened to “Mary”. Yet, when Mr. Freeman called Marguerite “Ritie”, she was perfectly fine with it; or when Bailey called her “Maya”, she was also fine with being called by it. The fact that Marguerite hated working for Mrs. Cullinan might have had something to do with her hating that Mrs. Cullinan shortened her name to “Mary”. She hated Mrs. Cullinan, but she loved Bailey, and, for a while, she also loved Mr. Freeman. Marguerite accepted the nicknames from them, but never once accepted Mrs. Cullinan. Nicknames can also say the opposite of what they mean. For example, when the sheriff came into town to warn Momma, he called the men …show more content…
It might not hurt the person directly, but instead it might affect someone watching. When the powhitetrash girls mocked Momma, then proceeded to call her “Annie”, Momma didn’t show any signs of being upset. After they had mocked Momma and disrespected her, she still called them “Miz” and then their name; that fact made Marguerite so angry. Marguerite thought it was very disrespectful that the powhitetrash had called Momma “Annie”, and she just called them “Miz”. Calling them by “Miz” mean Momma still had respect for the powhitetrash. Marguerite didn’t think they deserved that respect, especially after one of them just showed their

The question of whether the educational systems are encouraging competition depending on the students engagement is a tricky one. On one side, one can feel that these competitions encourage students to have an environment with competition that focuses more on getting the material completed and becoming number one. However on the other hand one might feel that schools do not encourage competition it focuses more on actually understanding the material. Evidence suggests that most people feel that education should be taught in a different ways where students feel encouraged to prosper. By examining “I Know Why The Caged Bird Cannot Read” by Francine Prose, “Emerson on Education” by Ralph Waldo, “Superman and me” by Sherman Alexie, and “Best in Class” by Margaret Talbot, it will become more…

Throughout time, there have been many words that have offended people of many races and religions. Even in this time period, there continue to be such words. However, there are words that are not meant to be offensive since they carry a different meaning behind them. A car’s name is supposed to evoke respect as well as engender consumer interest in a product, but sometimes manufacturers choose an identity that does just the opposite. We can’t always say for certain why a manufacturer would choose a particular (bad) name, but we can identify some of the worst car names of all times and the history behind those models. 1. A picture is worth a thousand words, but a name is worth a first impression. The name given to a person at births establishes how the person perceives themselves as well as how others view that person. With nothing but a name, people can imagine and create images on how a person looks, what they talk like, how they move, and other characteristics that make a person who they are. In Natasha Tretheway’s Bellocq’s Ophelia, names and naming play an integral part of the story line of the series of poems.…

Though the word bitch is normally associated with negativity, but the word’s definition is “a female dog, fox, wolf, or otter.” Though the first definition isn’t necessarily associated with a negative use, the word bitch is typically used negatively.…

When we insult someone, the intention is to pick out something that is different about them that can be perceived as negative. We find an insecurity or trigger and use that as an advantage to win arguments or make points. When we “call out” someone 's behavior, we use words that have negative connotations to share our feelings and shape others ' perceptions. While this type of communication is sometimes essential in the world of persuasion, it becomes strictly destructive when the difference or insecurity at play is a person 's gender. Bitch is not a “bad word” because it 's meant to offend; it 's bad because it turns the word woman into an insult.…

Kinship terms are a way for the speaker to refer to themselves or others. For example, two brothers may call each other anh (older brother) and em (younger sibling). However, kinship terms do not have to be used solely with people who are related. It is normal for a couple to call each other em and anh. When kinship terms are used in direct address, they add both an increased formality and level of personal concern (Thompson, 1965).…

In 16 years, I have heard people call others names plenty of times, and I’ve often found myself at both the delivering and receiving end of name calling. When I was 3, I called a girl a "bucket head" and threw a hula hoop at her. At age 7, upon moving to America, I someone called me an "alien." The other day I called my friend a “dumbass.” While I’ve experienced many different versions of name calling, only recently have I sat down to ponder the effects of using these phrases and what they mean about us all as individuals.…
