She was one of the most famous African-American woman figure. She was an American writer and great actress, as well as an inspiring figure as a poet, who was the feature poet at president Bill Clinton's 1993 inauguration. Maya was also well known as a great educator, historian, author, playwright, director, and producer. Angelou had a distinguished career in film as well as television. In 1971 her Georgia, Georgia was the first movie screenplay by a black woman to be produced. She was nominated for Tony Award in 1973 for her performance in look away and for an Emmy Award in 1977 for her performance in Roots. Maya was active in the Civil Rights Movement and was greatly inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during that time, precisely from 1960 to 1961 she served as Northern coordinator for the Southern Christian LeadershipConference(SCLC). Maya had many famous works, however she was very well known for her autobiography: "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings",which happens to be the same book I am going to be writing about. In this particular book, Maya pours out the first 17 years of her life, which happened to be during the civil rights movements, a time when being black was not necessarily a good thing. In her own words, Maya said " If growing up is painful for the Southern Black girl, being aware of her displacement is the rust on the razor that threatens the throat, it is an unnecessary
