I admire the restraint both women demonstrated. Neither Momma nor Cofer should have reacted any differently when disrespected with such rude and childish behavior. In the book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, as stated in the story Momma showed great restraint when, "She sang on. No louder than before, but no softer either. No slower or faster"(31). It's as if she turned to God to find strength to restrain herself from acting out on those girls by singing hymns, and found great power from something greater than herself. She had the option of running and hiding but she courageously stood her ground. By the same token, Cofer showed great restraint. She clearly states, “I had really wanted to push the jerk into the the swimming

The question of whether the educational systems are encouraging competition depending on the students engagement is a tricky one. On one side, one can feel that these competitions encourage students to have an environment with competition that focuses more on getting the material completed and becoming number one. However on the other hand one might feel that schools do not encourage competition it focuses more on actually understanding the material. Evidence suggests that most people feel that education should be taught in a different ways where students feel encouraged to prosper. By examining “I Know Why The Caged Bird Cannot Read” by Francine Prose, “Emerson on Education” by Ralph Waldo, “Superman and me” by Sherman Alexie, and “Best in Class” by Margaret Talbot, it will become more…

Bailey, who is a character from I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, was scared because he saw a dead body, and he had to carry that body to the prison. “The man was dead and rotten. Not stinking but rotten… I picked up a side of the sheet and walked right in the calaboose with the men” (Angelou 196, 198). Even though Bailey was frightened of seeing a dead body, he was more terrified that this could happen to any African American.…

Considered by many to be the, “Most talented Rapper of his Generation,” Kendrick Lamar has become extremely influential and popular since the release of his hit album Good Kid, M.A.A.D City (Stone). It is this great influence around which his second and most recent album, To Pimp A Butterfly, is based. Throughout the album Lamar struggles in dealing with his wealth and influence: each song is a slow progression from an abusive, wealthy consumer to a wiser man who understands the good he can do with his power and influence. At the beginning of his album, Lamar blatantly abuses his power: he is a carless, all consuming “caterpillar” (Mortal Man).…

“Think of a time when you’ve read prose or poetry that is presented in such a way that you have a fleeting sense of being startled by beauty of insight, by a glimpse into someone’s soul. All of a sudden everything seems to fit together or at least have some meaning for a moment.” (Lamott, 99). In said quote, Lamott describes precisely how I felt while reading her book, Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life. Bird by Bird is a writing guide intended for young writers and all who wish to write.…

Karen Cushman's Catherine, Called Birdy accurately portrays the process and rules of arranged marriages but depicts the expulsion of Jews from England in 1290 partially inaccurately to make the storyline more entertaining. Catherine, Called Birdy is historically accurate when it describes several Jews traveling to London from other parts of England for King Edward I to expel them. In the novel, the Jews are travelling but seek shelter from the heavy rain. Catherine explains that the Jews must leave England because the King had ordered their expulsion.…

In the novel I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings black men suffer more than black women. For instance, in the novel Maya Angelou states, “The Black woman in the South who raises sons, grandsons and nephews had her heartstrings tied to a hanging noose. Any break from routine may herald for them unbearable news” (114). Specifically the black men were in constant fear of being lynched or punished for a crime they did not commit. For example, a used-to-be sheriff warns Momma to tell Uncle Willie to lay low because the “boys” also known as the Klan were out after a black man messed with a white woman.…
