Maya Angelou helped Melinda speak up about what happened to her. Melinda has a picture of Maya Angelou in her escape closet at school. Maya is an inspiration for Melinda. She was banned from the school library for her book I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. This book is about racism and trauma, Melinda feels banned just like her and her book. Melinda doesn’t fit in and is being challenged for her traumatic experiences. Maya speaks up about her traumatic experiences and Melinda wishes she could do the same thing. In the book I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings Maya was also a victim of rape, people are shutting Maya down for writing about these traumatic events and Melinda is scared people will do the same to her. Maya had to go through many obstacles and Melinda thinks of Maya as a role model. Even though Melinda was having a difficult time dealing with the obstacles in her life, she sees how Maya did it …show more content…
Melinda didn’t have any friends at school and the one she did have left her for the popular girls. Melinda is feeling abandoned from all aspects of her life, her parents don’t communicate with her and are oblivious to the fact that she is in pain. Melinda’s so called “friends” ignore her and tease her for calling the cops. Her teaches don’t give her any thought. In I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings Maya says “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you”. This quote reminds me of Melinda, she needs to tell her story. In The Speak book when Andy tries to rape her for the second time she won’t let him get away with it. “Maya Angelou looks at me. She tells me to make some noise. I open my mouth and take a deep breath”.(Anderson 194) Maya helped Melinda find her voice, in that second Maya made her believe she could do it. Melinda puts up a fight, and says no even though she never thought she would be able to. Maya’s picture just being there made Melinda
