different names. Names can be a sign of respect, be accepting, can be insulting, or be
embarrassing. We'll focus on the first three for this. Did you know that saying “Stick and stones
may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” well in this story it’s something else.
First off names can be a sign of respect. During the period of the book it was required by all blacks to address the whites by Mr.or Mrs.as a sign of respect. Maya called Mrs. Flowers “Miz. Bailey calls
Marguerite by “Maya” (68) and she doesn't mind, like my Uncle Christopher he goes by Pipper sometimes, and my grandparents sometimes call me Christopher sometimes and it gets annoying at times. Mama calls all her friends sister or brother because they are close to her, like how my friend Connor Eubanks is like a brother to me.
Some names are just down right dang insulting and it doesn’t have to be about the person
Itself. When the sheriff of Stamps, Arkansas told Mama that Uncle Willey needs to hide because
the good old boys are coming (17) also known as the KKK, and to me calling them the good old
boys is not alright because they do nothing that is good and let's just say that if I meet one it would not look pretty. When the white children came down the hill they called Mama by her first name and that's disrespectful to adults that aren’t your parents, and Mama called them miz when they left the store to children. When Maya had to work for Mrs. Cullinan she called Maya “Mary”(107) because she thought it was under her to try to remember a black person's name, and that just makes my anger level go over
