A wise person once said, “Excuses change nothing, but make everyone feel better.” Because apologizing changes nothing, people don’t do it. This is true, but when you don’t take responsibility for something no one feels better what happened. I Know What You Did Last Summer is a high-energy must-read novel that teaches a valuable life lesson that holds true for today’s teenagers: take responsibility for what you do. In I Know What You Did Last Summer, the author uses conflict to teach us to own up to what we do even if it is something bad. For example, “He’s going to kill me, Julie thought incredulously. He’s going to kill me, because of what I’ve done!”. The characters didn’t own up to their vehicular manslaughter on a little boy; therefor, the characters were threatened by a relative of the boy and were almost killed since they didn’t take the blame. For example, my friend cheated on a test and because she didn’t own up to it she received a zero. She choose to cheat and made a good grade but, the teacher caught her. The teacher said that if she owned up, she could have another chance to redo the grade, but she didn’t own up and got in trouble. Furthermore, not owning up for what you do can also be in your personal life. For instance, if you did something illegal you could be arrested and put in jail for a longer period of time than normal because, not taking responsibilities and covering something up is also lying. This can cause you to be put away for a long time and hurt your relationships with other people. Your family and friends could leave you and you will be left with no-one.
