My ears started to ring. It was same throbbing noise I had whenever I heard someone talking about American Idol. My heart started to beat really fast, and I could feel my blood racing through my body. It was only five o’clock in the morning and our day was only beginning.

It was now dinner time, which meant we would soon be in our bunks to rest. During this time, cadets would receive letters from friends and loved ones. I didn’t expect anything to come for me, but my dad sent me a letter. He told me that my grandfather (papa) had come into town to visit from Brazil and both of them were proud of me. After announcing papa’s arrival, he started rambling on about shit I didn’t really care about.

She took full advantage of my parents not knowing what certain English phrases meant. I noticed that my dad didn’t talk much about mom, and thought it was strange.
