Do you remember when you were a little kid and you had to climb on your counter-top to reach a cabinet? I remember it as if it was yesterday, maybe because it really was. Last night my dog bit me! My dad about shot him in the head with a shotgun, but I told him not to because that Bruiser, my dog, is too stupid to know what he did. He still wanted to shoot him in the face so I stood in front of Bruiser and told my dad to lower his weapon. I knew he would because I’m his baby girl and I can get anything I want, but I don’t do that because then I would be a spoiled brat and no one wants that.…

I was 23 before I was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder. As far back as Elementary school I knew that there was something “off” in the way that I processed information. That my ability to do well academically was somehow hindered by not having certain tools that I needed, tools I wasn’t even aware existed. In high school, I began to augment my deficits with strengths. Where my grades were lacking I made up for it through creativity; I excelled at art and photography.…

I sat there in the hard seat of my desk and waited patiently. The scent of Lysol was overwhelmingly powerful in the room, but I knew by the third week it would be overpowered by the smell of musty children and chalk dust. I could not wait for my new teacher to saunter up to me, eyes full of admiration, and give me my paper. I had worked hard on it for nearly two months during the summer prior to this new school year. Looking around the room at my new classmates, it was easy to tell who had done the summer assignments, especially with their conspicuous faces.…

Since I’ve to Minnesota, I have gone with my roommate to his church several times. Back home, church was of vital to my family as my great grandfather started and still is the pastor of his own church, to which we all are apart of. So coming up here finding somewhere to go to church was a must and being apart of a community of people who shared a similar ideology as i did was important. I also have a small group of friends who I crochet and knit with from time to time. I enjoy this because my grandmother taught my siblings and I how to crochet as a stress relief activity and it reminds me of patience and focus and how beautiful item can be built out of them.…

“Failure always comes before success,” that’s what they all say, but in my case, it was never like that. Some are great in basketball, and some are experts in chess, but for me, it was public speaking. I loved it, it was what defined me, what made me feel confident. When I was in preschool, I went to my first poetry recital. It was only reciting a four lines of “Humpty Dumpty”, and I pretty sure I pronounced half of the words wrong, the experience was exhilarating, and ever since then, I was hooked to it.…
