In Judith Ortiz Cofer’s, “The Myth of the Latin Women: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria”, Cofer is talking about how hard it is to be a Latina girl and not get stereotyped in the process. Many people can relate to this because of the multiple ways to be stereotyped such as a jock, a nerd, or a hipster.. This is something I can personally relate to because, of the many people stereotyping young kids and adults with diabetes. In this paper I will be showing you how Diabetics and Latinas get stereotyped with mine and Cofer’s experience.
One of the many ways I can relate to Coffer is with wanting to fit in at a young age with the kids around me. As Cofer mentions,“As a Puerto Rican girl growing up in the United States and wanting like most children to “belong,” I resented the stereotype that my Hispanic appearance called forth from many people I met.”. In the case of Cofer she was able to get many people to look past her skin color, hair color, and accent. She was able to get people to see her for who she is and what she can contribute to the Latin culture. In my case, I was able to educate children, teachers, and parents about my life as a diabetic. I hope that when people look at me, they are able to see a vibrant, energetic person that loves Jesus Christ, not someone who is labeled with an autoimmune disease such as diabetes.I am hoping that by the time I have graduated from college, there will be a cure for Type One Diabetes. Honestly, I can not wait until the day comes when I do not need to check my blood sugar when I wake up or give myself insulin before eating food I want to devour so
