I want to consider being a teacher because, I hope to inspire children with no hope. Wililam Ayers stated in To Teach, “teacher’s often work in difficult situations, under impossible conditions. They teach youngsters who are compelled by law to attend school, many of whom have no need motivation or desire to be there”.
Most children, especially the African American children appear to be lost in a system that does not really care if they pass or fail. Home is not a desired place and school seem to be their only alternative. A life of feeling like no one cares does not motivate children to rise up to the challenge and fight for a better life. Teachers that care often times have no support from their superiors or parents. The school system

African Americans and education has always been a struggle. Over a hundred years ago, black people were not allowed to read or write because it was illegal for slaves to do, and if they were caught they were punished for trying to educate themselves. Their educational liberties were being seized from them, and when slavery was abolished they still had segregated schools. Despite that the law did allow them to attend school to educate themselves, the education system was still broken because of kids like Linda Brown, who is known for being associated with the case Brown vs. Board of Education. Linda was forced to walk across railroad tracks and take a bus to elementary school notwithstanding that her school was four blocks away from her house.…

With so much production and consumption of a plethora of different forms of media, too many people never need to need for it to be any different than how it is, never have to wish it would change. Too many people, unknowingly, take for granted something another group of people would weep with joy at finding. This is what being represented in the media can feel like. African Americans experience anywhere from negative representation to erasure from television, film, literature, and even the educational curriculum. The Brown vs. Board of Education case of 1954 laid the official foundation to the long construction of racial equality in public schools. The ruling officially stated that all public schools in the United States must be desegregated. Although the decision did not exactly combine black and white students evenly, it leaned the Constitution more on the side of racial equality. America has progressed tremendously in the 21st century, compared to the horrendous amount of racism that occurred in the previous century. Despite the desegregation of the education system, many minority students are still evaluated based upon their race, and limitations shackled around their success.…

As the Civil Rights Project (2000) notes, 40-60% of the inner/urban-city youth are dropping out in the United States. The populations that impacts are people of color living in inner/urban cities where their needs are neglected. Most of the current policies that are in place are not meant to help children of color, but to set them up for failure. The No Child left Behind that congress passed in 2001 was aimed to improve student testing outcomes, yet they neglected to see that children of color gap between white and colored students when it comes to test taking. Congress did not take into consideration the language barriers, lacking less preparation during the early years of this children education to perform well in test; in addition, lacking…

Poverty also plays a huge role in increasing the achievement gap between the white and black students. Studies indicate that poverty cuts across all races in different countries. According to the census data of 1990, 11.5 million children were living in poverty and the largest group in that category was the white population. Nonetheless, the percentage of ethnic groups shows that most of these people are the minority population (Jencks & Phillips, 2011). Despite poverty, several other issues which contribute to the achievement gap include family experience, values, cultural norms, segregation, attitudes of teachers the school environment and motivation of students (Hedges & Nowell 1999).…
