Many supporters believe it’s “cheaper to kill an inmate than to keep an inmate alive.” (Phillips). However, an investigation by The Reading Eagle revealed that each execution costs about $272 million. Right now there are 180 Pennsylvania prisoners with a death sentence looming over their heads. It will cost an estimated $360 million more than the cost of life without parole. (N. Brambilla). States with the death penalty use taxes to cover the expenses. So just to be clear, supporting death penalty means paying more money to get rid of people we decided can’t be a part of our society anymore.
Let’s focus in on this idea that people who kill deserve it die. Well, with that logic the people killing the ones who deserve to die, in turn, deserve to die themselves. But that’s just me getting too picky with the word choice. The real defense against that argument is who are we to decide who lives, and who dies? Even if a judge was in the room at the time of the murder so they can say without a single doubt this person committed the crime, the judge still cannot see the future.
