Johnson King Case Analysis

Improved Essays
I have chosen a Public Relations agency called Johnson King and retrieved their Mission Statement from http://www.missionStatements.com and the About Us Tab from this link http://www.johnsonking.com/reputation.php. (Please see Appendices A and B for full texts of both).
Assumptions
According to Carpenter, Taylor and Erdogan (2009), “A Mission Statement communicates the organization’s reason for being and how it aspires to serve its key stakeholders”. That said, there is no “magic formula” as companies and individuals have unique purposes and aspirations. So I have chosen to refer to “Answer 4 Questions to get a great mission Statement” from Forbes.com (n.d.) and “ 9 characteristics of an Effective Mission Statement” from Dontigney (n.d), (namely

The website talks about “media relationships” which are not mentioned in the Mission Statement. It also focuses on creativity vs leading specialist agency
WHOM DO WE DO IT FOR? Partnership with Finn is not mentioned in the Mission Statement, nor anything about rigorous training (vs informal yet professional working environment that encourages and rewards creativity, insight, teamwork and enthusiasm). Technology is mentioned in both although telecoms specified in the Mission Statement.
WHAT VALUE ARE WE BRINGING? Results-driven business goals approach mentioned in both although reputations are not mentioned in the Mission Statement.

Further Observations
For me, notable omissions in the Mission Statement were the financial objectives of Johnson King and key stakeholders (Media, Johnson King Management and Partners). What also surprised me was their approach to differentiating which in part bases its argument on the poor reputation of other agencies (empty promises and meaningless jargon). For these reasons, the company could be seen to be putting out inconsistent messages and excluding key stakeholders’ interests, or simply like many other PR agencies behind with their own marketing and PR in their quest to service their busy client

An individual mission statement can be an extraordinary help in keeping you propelled and focused on your standards, particularly when difficulties are out of control. It doesn't need to be excellent or even especially expressive: it basically needs to portray you, your exercises, and how and why you complete them. In the event that you don't have a mission statement or need to redo yours, now is a decent time to survey the benefit of having your mission statement.…

Grunig’s Excellence theory, developed in the 1970s and 1980s, posits an umbrella concept which intends to explain the value of public relations as well as its mechanisms within the organization and with its external stakeholders (Grunig, 2008). The model revolves around the assurance that decisions made by companies consider the stakes and benefits between the organizations itself and its stakeholders. The most essential element of the Excellence theory is the degree to which a public relations operation involves itself in the strategic planning of a company rather than as an information outlet, in relation to the crucial decisions made by others in the organization. It endeavours to cultivate more negotiation culture and deepen collective…
