Some students know exactly where they want to go to college, often because their parents went there or the school is close to home. Even if you are a student who has decided exactly where you want to go to college, it is a good idea to have a back-up plan. Whether you think you have your perfect school picked out or you have no idea where you want to go to college, a college checklist can help you find the best places to apply.

To start your checklist, make a list of qualities you either want or do not want in a college. Then you can check off items as you look at different universities. While everyone's checklist will be different, here are three ideas to get you started:

Location

Some students want a college in a large city. Others prefer a smaller town. Some students want to go to school in-state. Others want to get away from home and will only consider out-of-state schools.

If you have lived your whole life in a warm climate, do you really want to go to school somewhere where it snows for most of the winter? If you are used to rain year-round, are you ready for a place where it rarely rains?

Extracurricular Activities

If you are a fan of sports, either as a participant or as a spectator, you may want to check what sports that school offers on both an intercollegiate and intramural level. If you are not a fan of sports, you may want to consider a school that is less sports-focused. Other things to consider are clubs, musical groups, drama programs, religious organizations, and other groups that you may want to join.

Majors

Many students do not know their major when they start college. Even if you do not know your exact major, if you have it down to two or three possibilities, make sure the school offers these options. If not, you may end up having to transfer schools to complete your
