“I have a few people to thank. I am most obviously indebted to Mr Patel my gratitude to him is as boundless as the Pacific Ocean and I hope that my telling of his story does not disappoint him.” (xii) I believe the person speaking in the author’s note is not Yann Martel, it is in fact another character in his story. This book is fictional so it would make little sense for Martel to thank his made up character in an author note that he wrote. Meaning that the ‘author’ is another element in his story. I believe that Martel used this literary device as a way to add more depth and mystery into his story.

I most definitely believe that Pi was polytheistic and also believe that it was entirely possible. In my opinion, …show more content…
I am the only one who limits myself, who causes fear, and who stops myself from achieving the things I want. Richard Parker was a cause of trouble and stress for Pi. “It was a resounding success. I stopped whistling and sat down heavily on the raft, out of breath and exhausted. And so it came to be: Plan seven: Keep him alive.” (166) The tiger could have turned on him and attacked him at any moment. Humans reflect the animals observed very easily. Most people only think about themselves and very few reach out to help other people. People tend to think if it’s not happening to them then it’s not their problem, and that’s entirely untrue. People turn a blind eye when it comes to other people’s suffering and very rarely care about something other than themselves. Pi observed this when Richard Parker attacked the other blind man, he wasn’t feeding him like Pi had been so what was the point of keeping him around? One of the strategies for why Pi remained alive is because he cared for and trained Richard Parker. I he didn’t help the tiger and keep him happy the book would have been over much faster. This teaches us to see our problems for what they are, a way to learn. Everytime We overcome a problem we are learning something new about ourselves and are confronting one of the many troublesome monsters that want to stop us from achieving the things we want
