I Hate My Handwriting

I used to hate my handwriting; I despised it. My own mother used to deride me for it. She would tell me it must be illegible to anyone who wasn’t me. However, I knew that wasn’t true in the slightest - I couldn’t even read it myself half the time. So, I started to type everything, avoid handwriting at all times. Sometime sophomore year, my friend and I were working on a project together, and she had the loveliest handwriting. She wrote in condensed, flowing cursive that could make words look like a painting. At first, I was envious. I had wished that I had her handwriting; however, I’ve never been the kind of person to waste time on envy, and comparing yourself to others is exactly the thing you want to do if you never want to move anywhere in life. At first, I was trying to be something I wasn’t- I was trying to be someone else. But, in the process of doing this, I discovered my own person. I use handwriting as a solid and very visible example. I was unhappy and self-conscious of how I was, so I changed, and in the end was better for it. I used this line of thinking for more than just my handwriting: This way of thinking helped me to mold myself into a person I could be proud of. I am my own person now- no amount of self-consciousness can hold me back from being who I truly am.
My motto for life became- and still is- if you think things are going to be miserable, they always will be. But if you put your best foot forward and convince yourself that there is always a way to make anything better, then untoward qualities turn into something you can work with. For example, if you fake a smile and go with the flow, eventually your happiness becomes genuine and you have the power to push through any situation. Or, if you change your handwriting, you won’t be so self-conscious about
