Wortman and I attempted to make our way through the mass accumulation of students which filled the halls of O.H.S to the brim, at this point in the Job Shadow I had not realized how many students actually attended the high school at one time. The name of the second period class was Employment Readiness, this class is meant to help reaffirm the basic skills of life such as hygiene which was the topic that day. Mrs. Wortman had the students either work with a partner or by themselves on making a poster that they had to put the do’s and don’ts of hygiene but all of a sudden the fire alarm went off the sound of the alarm was like someone blowing a sports whistle in your ear as loud as possible, this of course forced all classes to vacate the building and go to the football field for a space in time of ten minutes to make sure that every student was out of the building. After the drill we went back inside where Mrs. Wortman took me on a tour of the entire high school campus from the new Science Building to the Ag. Shop. “One of the aspects I enjoy the most is I like seeing them be successful in their life instead of just falling into the cracks of society, and the aspect I dislike the most is having to see the students try and hide the signs of abuse and having to make the dreaded phone call to have child services come and remove the child from their home.
The last question I inquired her about was how has working in this field changed you?
“Well it has definitely made my patience’s levels increase by far patience’s in one major trait you must possess in this field along with “rhino skin” what I mean with that is some of the kids say stuff that can be hurtful if you don’t have rhino skin. Another thing is it really opened my eyes to the hardships that some of the students go through every day.”
After I finished the interview it was time for me to leave even though I didn’t want to I had to at that point it was time for lunch, as I left Mrs. Wortman escorted me out and welcomed me to come back if I wanted to which I was glad to hear. This job shadow was the best experience I have ever
