Personal Narrative: The Woman In The Classroom

I remember all the children; white, black, Hispanic, and so much more. I had never seen so many different colored people all in one school. I remember walking up to two women, one black, one white. Their names were Mrs. Brown and Ms. Mallard. Mrs. Brown had light orange curly hair, very tall, and a Jamaican accent. Ms. Mallard, on the other hand, had blonde curly hair, average height, no accent, and green eyes. She spoke very articulately, pronouncing each word fully. My mother and watched the two women greet us with their “hellos.”
I was very shy, so I didn’t say much. Mother did all the talking really. She introduced us to the two women before us. I didn’t listen that much because I was too focused on the other children in the building. Although

My teachers told us to check out these books that had little-colored dots on the spine. They were called A R books. I realized these women were not playing games when it came to this reading subject. Mrs. Brown would take some of the other students back to the classroom and would have “reading table”. Ms. Mallard would keep the rest of the students in the Media Center and would read to them there. Most of the time I would go with Mrs. Brown. We would sit at this mooned- shaped table and she would read stories to us. When the class was in the whole group we would practice our letters, sounds, vowels and consonants, even whole …show more content…
I could not stand to sit inside as the other kids went outside and played with their friends. But now I realized that Mrs. Brown and Ms. Mallard made those reading circles help me. Mr. Anthony and Ms. Kacey read and wrote with me to help me. My mom made me stay inside by myself and learn so she can help me. She made me come home and practice more so she could help me. All these pushed me to be the best. There is a poem I love written by the mayor of Newark, New Jersey. It goes,” I am beautiful on purpose. I come in many shades and styles. I am outstanding. From the way, I walk, to the way I talk. I am intelligent. I can do anything I put my mind to. And create whatever I think of. I am already a success because I study, I learn, and I work hard. My school needs me. My family needs me. And my community needs me. I will let nothing or no one stand it my way. Knowing the world is because I was, and it will be because I am.

When I was in six grade, my PE coach made it clear to me that I wasn't alone, and I could accomplish anything I put the time and effort into. He was the football coach for Atascocita middle school. An African American in his late 20s, very friendly, and Guidable when it came to his students. On the first day of school as a new student with no knowledge of the language, I was extremely terrified to transform from speaking different language, and having a similar set of friends into an inexperienced world and dissimilar students who I had absolutely nothing in common with. Fortunately, I had my brother as a personal translator throughout the year.…

I didn’t realize what my teachers and educators were subjected to. As a child I was very naive, which is what I was supposed to be. I never thought that my school was overcrowded or operating below any standards.…

As a child raised in a predominantly African-American neighborhood, my initial encounter with people from other backgrounds occurred when the school district started bussing kids across the city to largely populated white schools. While this experience took us out of our neighborhood schools, it provided an opportunity to meet students from other races, ethnicities, and religions which were different from me. Interacting with kids from various backgrounds helped me to be more open to different perspectives and not to prejudge. Additionally, the church I grew up in was very strict.…

Upon entering my 1st grade classroom, students are welcomed into a multicultural, yet simple world. There are a few maps on the wall and a globe in a corner, and some family photos on my desk. Just like many other fourth graders, I was able to read signs passing by, book covers on the shelf in front of me, or posters on the wall effortlessly and involuntarily. I never thought about it until that point however. Basically, I took the ability to read and write for granted. After she told me about the impossibility of not reading, I became more aware of the words around me. As a fourth grader, I didn’t have to stare at the red octagons on the road and think, “S-T-O-P… ssstttt… aaaahhh… P… STOP!”…

It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…

Respecting myself is what I consider to be one of my defining characteristics, so when I heard one of my male cross country teammates saying offensive things about me and my female teammates, I had to say something. At this time four out of the six girls on my team were dealing with some type of injury. Problems with our hips, knees, and ankles were some of the issues we were dealing with. This particular male teammate was saying things like, “Our girls team is really slacking right now.” In addition, he was mocking us by saying, “I can’t go to practice today because I have a hangnail.”…
