Reflective Essay: The Perspective Of My Celtic Heritage

Improved Essays
Perspective always changes, its one of my favorite things in life, watching and seeing the perspective of something being changed. Whether it be gradual or instantaneous, its always a treat. For example, I hated the bagpipes, let me rephrase, I didn’t understand the bagpipes. Back then at least. This all changed when I was 13, an 8th grader. I was on top of the world because what 8th grader isn’t. I come from a multi-cultural family, my mother Pilipino and my father a mix of Celtic and English heritage and one summer my father decided that we should explore our Celtic heritage. We knew little and what we did know was that we were from Clan Campbell. After a quick internet search he found what he thought was the greatest thing in the whole …show more content…
The day started off with my family of 5 piling into our typical grey suburban mini-van with sliding doors and drove what felt like hours but was really 15 minutes down the road, a trip I made several times a day. Everyone in the car with the exception of myself was filled with excitement and curious about what they were about to see. My father spouted out all of his knowledge to us in the car, there was no escape to the stream of words escaping his mouth, “Did you know our ancestors fought in this war, and that’s why were enemies with this clan!”, “Clan McDonald killed several of our ancestors and to this day we still fight.” a nonstop flow of information, much like Niagara falls. When we finally parked it was like the level of excitement increased tenfold. As we left the air-conditioned car, the heat hit me like a ton of bricks, I was not, I repeat not happy. We wandered the festival grounds which was on a golf course, the crowd of people were catted by the straight row of stalls, filled with kilts, food, and cheap jewelry. There was a mixture of normal people dressed in normal clothes and people who dressed like they lived in the medieval times. The air was a mixture of sweat and beef pastry’s. What followed the smell was the sound, the sound of chatter, people peddling, and bagpipes. Needless to say it was loud, it was all stimulating to the mind it still did not peak my interest and I wanted to go

As a child, my parents shaped me into their ideal image of a little girl. The formation of their ideals actually started long before I first opened my eyes in the hospital. My story began back in 1988, when my parents met while working at Walt Disney World as cultural exchange workers from Canada. Their romance is a fairy tale. They had their first date at the Magic Kingdom, they spent all their days off on a Florida beach, and they experienced the technical magic that Disney is so well-known for.…

The Pieces of my Italian and Irish Ancestry : Putting Together the Puzzle of a Family There are about 7,372,041,161 people in the puzzle of the universe and they all have a story to tell. You have a story, I have a story, the homeless man that sits in Central Park and feeds the ducks has a story, even your six year old chocolate lab has a story to tell. Whether it is a misfortune, coincidence, or even a miracle. My story began on the sixteenth day of June in the year of 1996, the day I took my first breath, opened my deep, dark, brown eyes and saw the white pistachio walls of St. Claire Hospital. I was the last piece to the Nuccetelli family puzzle.…

In my area, the tight-knit community of Garnet Valley, most of the residents have the same idea of families. Families will support you, families will help you when no one is there to help, and families will love you no matter what. Driving down the streets of this growing community, everyone can see the stick figure bumper sticks with the mom, dad, and maybe a few siblings. Even their stick figure family on the bumper of their car are together. During school, you read about families and hear from other people about how funny their family dinners are.…

Dear First Year Writing Assessment Committee: In this letter, I will explain my learning outcomes and experiences with my essays for English 1010. English 1010, defined by academic standards, is to develop in first-year college writers a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing through instruction and guided practice in the skills, processes, and strategies necessary for effective, successful writing. In my past semester of English 1010, I was able to demonstrate my abilities to be an effective writer and enhance my writing skills through guiding essay projects. I do believe my abilities were improved in topics including: finding the author’s purpose, explaining ideas, revising, editing, proofreading, organizing the structure of my paper, and etc.…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. During English 102 this year, reading and writing in class helped me expand my writing skills, improved my will to comprehend, and most importantly helped expand my knowledge.…

I remember that day; as the color drains from my face, and I feel a mild unease creeping up my throat. The words at the tip of my tongue, shuffling inside my mouth. The image crumpled up not as vivid as before, just the ambiance of black and white, but I could still feel my surroundings. Not the way you do when you reach out to touch the object in front you of you with your bare hands, no, I can feel the surroundings like the walls closing in on me. Laying in distress as its ceaseless lesson on this broken record stuck on the same note.…

When I began studying at the University of Montevallo, I had a background of high school creative writing and English classes, and one summer of a college English class. To be honest, I was terrified of jumping into my fall English 102 class. I felt I was unprepared for a serious college level composition class, and that I would have a strenuous time adjusting to a four-year university. However, as I walk away from my English 102 class I carry the understanding of writing a college level essay, undertaking research and completing a research and argument paper properly, and knowledge to prepare me for my other classes and profession.…

It was a beautiful morning, and I was about to have a big week ahead of me. I was thirteen years old when I embarked on a journey to go camping with my church friends at a place called the Wilds. I have been to a Christian camp before, but I had never been without my parents. It felt substantially odd that I was going to a Christian camp without my family for one whole week. I was tragically confused with several emotions such as excitement, fear of the unknown, and worry.…

Throughout the past few weeks of Studies in English Education, the main aspect that has been addressed is the term ‘multiliteracies.’ From completing this portfolio and attending each of the workshops, I have learned that to become a text producer I need to be involved with the variety of functions in language and literacy. Hill (2012) states that ‘to be multiliterate means to be literate in print-based and new communication technologies’ (p. 361). Such technologies include ‘electronic literacies, technoliteracies, digital literacies, visual literacies and print-based literacies’ (Hill 2012, p. 361).…
