My Relationship With Hardin Simmons

In 2013 I decided I would be attending Hardin–Simmons University in the fall. This wasn’t an easy decision and it would have an obvious effect on the family system. Although my mom wasn 't thrilled with my decision, she helped me make the move. Once I was settled into my dorm at Hardin–Simmons, I was for the first time, independent. My family was over 1,000 miles away. This was intimidating, but I acclimated well. During this time, my relationship with my mom changed. Rather than talking with authority, my mom started talking to me as a friend. This was a step in the right direction. My friendship with my mom allowed me a healthy connection to my family, while the distance allowed me a stable, rather than emotional, foundation. In 2014 I …show more content…
My boyfriend, Gary Martinez, flew to Chicago to meet my family and help me move back down to Abilene. Once I was settled back in Texas, my family stopped having family dinners. At this point in my life, I felt like I had a better understanding of my family. I had created individual relationships with both my siblings and my parents. Conflict between two family members, which did not concern me, didn’t affect my relationships. I was able to maintain positive and supportive relationships without being overly involved in family dysfunction. This symbolized separate but healthy alliances between family members and …show more content…
Gary and I were now a unit, our own family. We were, like most newlyweds, enmeshed. Unfortunately for Gary and I, our first year of marriage has been difficult. Being opposites, we encountered many conflicts. Throughout this year, I have noticed that my relationship with my mom has again changed. At first, I would go to my mom for any questions that I had. This was only natural due to the nature of our relationship. However, I quickly learned that my husband comes first. This is one way my eyes have been opened to the fused relationship my mom and I have. My husband and my mom have a limited relationship. She sees Gary as the man who took me away from her. This frustration has inevitable placed strain on their relationship. Regarding life decisions, Gary and I work together. He is neither above me or below me. My role as a wife is fairly traditional. I cook, clean, do laundry, and manage the budget. My husband works full time and is an excellent

This was a day I’ll never forget, for this day while complaining about my family reunion to a coworker, named Terri, I was taught a valuable lesson about family when she invited me to attend her family reunion next June at the Corsicana State School. “You think your family is dysfunctional, come and meet mine” this exuberant woman exclaimed. This is her story. “There I was, this red-haired freckle faced scrawny kid aboard the Orphan train headed to the unknown”. One of ten children aboard that old, dusty, smelly black train car headed to Corsicana State Home.…

In the Journal of Family Psychology, the authors stated “Overall, findings reveal that positive aspects of the quality of relationships or support among family members have concurrent, short-, and long-term linkages to psychological adjustment and well-being (Fuller-Iglesias, Webster, & Antonucci, 2015; Mallers, Charles, Neupert & Almeida, 2010, para. 3). Consequently, this shows that if they were to have a family of their own there might be difficulties to create a strong family foundation. Those positive aspects weren’t in their childhood because of what they went through with their parents and making their kids go through the same thing isn’t what they feel is best for…

Genogram Paper Jermaine Hibbert Seton Hall University Genogram Paper Engaging in the genogram assignment proved to be a challenging, arduous, and enlightening experience to say the least. Although, my genogram is not as extensive and accurate as it could be, that in and of it-self proved to be an area of unexplored learning of growth. Firstly, I will cover the information I was able to glean from my journalism like exploits with the few family members I knew well enough to answer some of the tell-all questions I was expected ask. Secondly, I will attempt to explore and process as best as I can all the limitations, whether self imposed or boundaries that my large, yet somewhat disconnected family has set in place.…

Linked by Blood Sala, sala, sala, my silver anklets chime as I swish and twirl in the mirror, admiring the skirt of my dabang. I was looking forward to showing the dark blue, flowing dress off at my grandparents’ annual family Ramadan feast. The dress glides as I saunter to the balcony of my room. The pale pink sky was slowly transitioning into a light blue as the sun rose farther into the sky, like an unsatisfied painter painting over his strokes. I breathe in the sweet smell of ripe bananas and flowering roses wafting from our large garden below.…

When I moved to Orlando, Florida, I was twelve years old. I did not know what to expect when it came to the Orlando weather, their school system or their people. My mom called me one day when I was on my way home from school and told me we would be moving, at the time I did not know where we were moving to, but I knew I was not going to be okay with moving away from my neighborhood friends who I have been friends with since the second grade. Once I came home, the majority of our house was already in boxes and I refused to pack any of my belongings because at the time I did not want to accept the fact that we were moving to an entire different state.…

Narrative Interview My mom had only told me little things about her college experiences, just a few stories here and there, the occasional frantic phone calls to her mom, and some about the friends she made. So when I decided to sit down and interview her, I was generally curious on what she would tell me. I had been contemplating the questions I would ask her while I was waiting for her to get home from work. After she had gotten home and I was satisfied with my list, I sat down and started the interview.…

Every family has unfinished business, and my family is no exception. Multigenerational patterns (Goldenberg & Goldenberg, 2013; McGoldrick, Gerson, & Shellenberger, 1999) influence and contribute to relationship problems within family systems and to individual development. In my family, many conflict situations, or events have seemingly been resolved, however, the unresolved patterns that have gone unaddressed continue to fester, repeating themselves over time in different situations and life events. Bequeathed from generations before, and acquired honestly, my family struggles with destructive behaviors and patterns as defined by Goldenberg & Goldenberg, (2013); cut- off, dysfunctional triangulation, conflicts with attachment figures, and…

Three years into my high school I hadn't gotten into the state of mind that most over achievers have. I had floated through high school thinking I was trying my very hardest to get good grades and become a consistently studious candidate of my school. However, no matter how hard I tried I failed I gave into all the distractions and used all my obstacles as excuses became frustrated and developed an attitude problem that I had created myself. Being a consistent 2.5 student wasn't satisfying or inspiring. Uniquely enough, I had decided to take challenging courses my junior year.…
