I Consider Myself As A Dysfunctional Writer

Improved Essays
I consider myself to be an awful writer. My whole life I've seen myself as mediocre throughout various schools and classes. I love writing and I feel like the things I create in my free time are pretty good. However, when I'm required to create an essay based off of a topic I either don't know or don't care about, I slack off and wait until the very last minute to get to work. I know I'm not alone in this endeavor, students today feel as if they are extremely average. If a student can find someone else's work, portray it as their own, and get a good grade from it; why not take the easy way out instead of putting themselves through unnecessary stress? I am not perfect. My writing is by no means perfect so, understandably, I felt a real connect

In his article “We Are Teaching High School Students to Write Terrible,” Matthew J.X. Malady claims that there is a plethora of problems with the essay section of the SAT and it is teaching students poor writing skills. He explains that one of the main reasons there are problems with the SAT essay is because readers take 2-3 minutes to grade each essay, and are rewarded for being speedy.…

In this fall semester of college what I’ve learned in Ms. Balderas class is knowing how to properly write a college written essay. I know after taking this course that I can somewhat write a well written essay that is college appropriate. In high school I was taught to write essay that were good enough for the teachers, but now that I’m in college I feel the need that I need to write better and show my instructor that I do know what I am writing about. I’ve learned so many ways to write a paper, but some of my essays aren’t there yet, I feel as if I haven’t gotten to the point where I’ve learned to write a paper that is good, but I know within time I’ll get there.…

I never considered myself to be an excellent writer but still thought I wrote well enough to get my point across without confusing the reader too much. However, any confidence that I had in my writing skills was lost for a short time when I had to write my first timed essay in school. Luckily, the timed essay assignment also helped me see that I needed to work on my writing and, as a result, actually turned out to be a more positive experience rather than a negative one. It was just another regular school day that was near its end, and I had one more class to go to before everyone was released to go home.…

Writing is a long process that requires time and skill to master and in order to acquire these skills one must take certain route. At he began of this semester i've come to understand that a good essay doesn't come from one round of writing it has to be reserves and thought out accordingly. There are good writers and there are good writers who work hard to become better. Mrs. Fiske, my English teacher junior and senior year of high school always told me that I was one of the best writers in my class but I could always be better. Spelling has always been one of my strong suits and I always get bothered when people can’t spell simple words. I’m pretty good at writing essays but I do not enjoy writing them at all.…

Adequate writing was always a struggle for me because I struggled with coming up with topics to write about. Even when teachers gave us prompts to write about I struggled writing about them mostly because I thought writing was boring. Another reason I was discouraged by writing was I would spend hours at a time trying to come up with ideas for a prompt and would barely come up with any ideas to write about. Being a civil engineering major I see why writing is so important in my career field. My experience with writing has had its good moments and its bad moments.…

After reading Paul Graham’s essay entitled “The Age of the Essay”, Michael Dickens brings up the a great point of spending one month per semester on writing essays. I too believe this is a great way for students to develop unique writing skills or even strive to improve on their writing. I’ve notice in class we don’t take much time to learn how to write a proper essay. We just read articles, literature and write it into a traditional hamburger format essay being intro, three body paragraphs and a conclusion. This does not allow me to improve on my writing nor challenges me to improve my writing in any way.…

As a student teacher, I would recommend students like me to get help with writing problems early. I still get help when it comes down to writing an essay. I’m also still learning how to be a better writer. When I think about writing, I always think about English classes doing most of the writing but writing is essential in every subject. I label myself as not being a writer but someday it’s going to be my duty to teach others to be.…

Upon my entry into English 1010-02, my first college writing class, I expected to breeze through the course with an easy-A and minimal effort after my successful completion of AP English 11 this past year. I began the year with the utmost confidence in my writing abilities, and believed that my skills were above par. It wasn’t until I received my score on the essay evaluation for my First-Week Essay- a measly five out of twenty- that I realized that this was not the case. At first, I was astonished that my seemingly exceptional writing skills had not earned me the A that I believed I deserved. However, as time went on I came to the realization that I had not put in nearly enough time or effort into the paper to receive more than a C at most.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

Being smart is a double edged sword. While we strive for perfection in our craft, it’s also believe we don’t create the best piece of writing that we can make. People in this community tend to be mad men, needing to get that high score. This comes at the price of believing good writing is unachievable to us. This cycle of destroying our perception of our own ability has a sudden break when others in the same community come and save us from our personal hell.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…

I was place into the second to lowest class this school had to offer when coming to this school, but I’ve probably should have entered the lowest class to build up the foundation of my writing skills. Exams are all the same; I study, review, quiz myself, and take the exam. With an essay I worry, plan, write an outline, write a draft (unless it is an in-class essay), revise, take a break, revise some more, and turn in a final draft that I am satisfied with in order to obtain a decent grade. The reason I made it this far is because my English writing skills have increased over the years and know I’ve finally developed the skills necessary to keep moving forward in my education. While taking an exam doesn’t require any skill; it does require techniques, but not skill, when the exam is being…
