I would like to introduce myself. I am Valeria Zaharchenko, RN graduated from Grand McEwan University four-year program would like to apply for the Graduate Centre for Nursing and Health Studies, Master of Nursing: Nurse Practitioner (MN:NP) program. Coming to this decision was a several years long process influenced by the exposure to the health care system both as a health care provider and a daughter of aging parents whose health is on decline. Becoming a nurse practitioner means having an opportunity to lead an accessible, family oriented and comprehensive approach in primary patient care.…
Critical thinkers in nursing exhibit these habits of the mind: confidence, contextual perspective, creativity, flexibility, inquisitiveness, intellectual integrity, intuition, open-mindedness, perseverance, and reflection. Critical thinkers in nursing practice the cognitive skills of analyzing, applying standards, discriminating, information seeking, logical reasoning, predicting, and transforming knowledge. Based on Benner’s theory, every nurse should be a critical thinker. The theory also helps nurses understand to solve the critical problems with smartly.…
Throughout the clinical day, I found myself critically thinking about numerous situations. A situation that involved critical thinking, although it did not comprise of skills or competencies, focused on therapeutic communication and relationships. The situation involved a resident who speaks very softly and disorganized, causing most staff and resident to ignore his voice. I had witnessed this resident that past two clinical days, but never really took the time to speak to him. Today, a nurse asked my partner and I to take this resident into the dining hall for lunch, assisting him to the correct spot and preparing his food.…
I am writing for the New Graduate Nursing Program on the Emergency Room Trauma floor at University of Maryland Medical Center. I currently hold a Bachelor’s in Biology and I will be graduating in August 2015 from Howard Community College School of Nursing, I plan to take my boards in September 2015. Enclosed you will find my resume which expands on my qualifications. Through my clinical rotations, I gained knowledge and hands-on experience in different settings, but it was during the many different simulations and mock codes I have participated in that I have found the path I want to pursue, ER nursing. I have always liked to be challenged and consider myself as a problem solver who thinks on her toes.…
The nursing profession is fortunate enough to hold an immeasurable amount of the public’s trust during their most vulnerable moments, in the hope of receiving optimal client centred care. A recent survey discovered that nurses are second to firefighters in a list of most trusted occupations (CNA, 2007). Moreover, nurses have the privilege of being in a self-regulated and self-governed profession. This means that the Canadian government believes that Ontario’s nursing regulatory body, College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), is best qualified to appropriately define its own members’ norms of practice and boundaries (Schiller, 2014). It is incumbent upon nurses to continuously justify that they are deserving of this honour by delivering uncompromised…
21). The purpose of critical thinking in nursing arises from the complex nature of client care; often the client is unable to articulate the underlying reason of their condition, which will require the nurse to provide a solution with limited information (Coutts, 2014). The rise in patient complexities presents increasing pressure and accountability for nurses to make informed decisions (Coutts, 2014; Lauri & Salantera, 1995). Due to the ambiguous nature of nursing and complex client diagnoses, nurses must apply insightful reasoning, intuition, theoretical knowledge, and previous experiences as their guide to making a decision (Banning, 2008; Blum, 2010; Coutts, 2014; Gillespie & Paterson, 2009; Lauri & Salantera, 1995; Payne, 2015; Tanner,…
American Sentinel University The Use of Clinical Reasoning in Advanced Physical Assessment The advancement of medicine, complexity of diseases, and the nurses’ ability in becoming increasingly autonomous, requires nurses to be prompt in solving problems. The expectations of the health care industry and society of shortened hospital stay, the need for nurses to do more in less time, and the overall intensity of the nursing care provided to patients continues to affect how nurses think and deliver patient care. The constantly changing world of health care mandates nurses to utilize clinical reasoning to guide their practice. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relationship between clinical reasoning and clinical decision making, consider clinical reasoning in advance physical assessment and identify the nurses’ use of critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and clinical judgment.…
This journey is meaningful to my nursing practice because it has ensured my success in clinical placements. Also, through the development of this skill, I am confident to say that I am ready for the transition to professional practice and I understand that critical thinking is not a standard nursing competency but a recurring theme that runs through various competencies. For my future practice, I hope to utilize critical thinking to study ad pass my NCLEX examination. Using this strategy will provide a framework for thinking through test questions and picking out correct choices (Ward & Morris,…
In the start of nursing school we are taught to take care of ourselves before taking care of others. So why is it that nurses forget to or perhaps ignore their health and wellbeing and become so fatigued? Nurses start their careers full of energy. They are excited to solidify their skills and discover the wonderful challenges and mysteries of healthcare.…
I was naïve in thinking that everyone that became a nurse was neutral in their thought processes. I was also naive in not acknowledging my own prejudices. It is human nature to have preconceived notions based on a lack of knowledge and understanding. Being human I am guilty of being prejudice. The key is being aware of this knowledge gap and correcting it.…
acuity has increased due to patients with multiple comorbidities, the nurse-to-patient ratio has remained unchanged. As the demands on the nurse continue to grow, feelings of frustration, stress, and dissatisfaction are experienced. Being forced to choose the tasks that are a priority and excluding others due to time constraints is not in the best interest of the patient and a contradiction to the Nursing Code of Ethics and nurses are all too often struggling to do what is morally right. Then next step in the process is to determine options that are available to resolve the ethical dilemma that the nursing shortage will create.…
Nursing is a profession as variable as humankind. From busy emergency rooms to mental health counselling to academia, nurses range in their knowledge, interests, and skillsets. What is essential to all of these settings is a drive to help people and an understanding of human nature. Thinking critically about a patient’s behaviour is fundamental to providing informed care, enabling nurses to follow the patient’s thought-process and view the world from their perspective. Foundational to this is a comprehension of how people develop, or more specifically, how people’s ability to think develops.…
Critical thinking involves identifying the problem, determining the solution and the best way to reach that solution. So a person who thinks critically concern about an event that was it effective and might have done in a better way. However as a nurse, should have the ability to make clear and correct decisions even at an immediate situation. Therefore it is vital to develop those skills in nurse’s education where some critical thinking skills come naturally. For instance when a nurse undergoing with a treatment of patient, wound treatment nurses are able to make instant decisions under pressure.…

Don’t dread the days of incompetent, think of these days are the basic foundation pathway that we needed to become the best competent nurse we will one day. I agree with you that we all need times and experiences to take us to the next level of competence. That is one of reasons that I constantly ask questions and ask the nurses to allow me to perform tasks to help me gain as much knowledge and experiences as I could. As long as we continues to search for learning experiences and apply update evidence base research practice, we will become the expert faster we will realized.…
