I think this happened because the princess loved him very much. We know she does by the quote, “This royal maiden was well satisfied with her lover, for he was handsome and brave to a degree unsurpassed in all this kingdom, and she loved him with an ardor that had enough of barbarism in it to make it exceedingly warm and strong.” If she did not love him she wouldn’t even have shown up to the arena or show him which door to choose. We also know she has feelings for him because she gets a little jealous and mad at the girl. It is human nature to feel mad that that the person you love might like another because we feel that the person is our territory. She knew that the man loved her very much because he put his life in her hands which is why she risked the chance of him falling in love with his new wife.
