I Believe In Feminisim

There are many reasons why I believe in feminisim. This one started years ago. I do not struggle with many of what other women do, being a young, white, middle class, girl living in a particularly liberal town, but I can sympathize with those who have it worse then me. I can understand the fear of walking home late at night, the startled feeling when the occupants car passing yells out at you.
I haven't been womanly for long, niether have my friends, but as we grow our curves we tend to shy away out of fear. We hear the stories and rumors of girls in our grade who dared to stand out. We hear the jokes made by the kids who have nothing better to do than laugh at a good cause.

Society creates many stereotypes that are distinguishable by the general public such as, the saying boys will be boys and the correlation between girls and the color pink. Personally, I grew up as a tomboy, and still am today at age eighteen. Growing up as a girl does come with its own set of expectations that society sets. When I was in elementary school I always hung out with boys because we had common interests like playing soccer, going to the pool, and playing videogames. I never realized how much I defied the social norm.…

In The Scarlet Letter, the main protagonist Hester Prynne is quite a strong woman handling all these trials basically on her own. The author Nathaniel Hawthorne depicts Hester without many of the stereotypes that we know to have been in women's lives. I would hope that those stereotypes have been long since buried, but sadly some still remain. Although there are many differences as to how women were treated in the colonial time, mid-America, and our own generation. Sadly there are still stereotypes and sexist views in the world, however these stereotypes are only true in respect to certain people not women in general.…

Overtime, gender roles have evolved. Women now work outside of the home, and may share some of the household duties with their husband. Baier gave me a lot to think about regarding gender roles and how they are displayed in society. It is possible to disregard gender and act in a way to feel right. People have been conditioned at an early age to perform certain roles based on their gender. It is enforced in the home, schools, community, church, and many facets of social media outlets.…

Contrary to what many believe, the Civil Rights Movement did not end in 1968 but shifted into a new phase of ideologies which laid the foundation for feminism. But these movements had to deal with comparable questions of how they would go about pursuing such prosperities effectively.…

Historically, women have had a disadvantage compared to their male peers. Until the 1920s, women did not wear pants, nor could they vote. Society has come far since then, women can now practically do anything a man can (vote, own land, join the army, make decisions), however, they are still believed to be inferior. To state this in similar terms, look at sports. Women don’t play football, and those sport that have female leagues, do not get close to the amount of attention as similar male sports do (Basketball, Softball).…

Being a hard working independent woman has been the goal of most women. They want to be treated the same way men are treated. Most women believe that they can do any job just as well, or better than men. It is against the law to discriminate a woman because of her gender. If it was not for Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony starting the women’s suffrage movement, women would not have any of the rights that they have today.…

Anyone who is living in the 21st century has heard of the movements of gender equality and feminism. This topic of interest has been around for awhile, and is making a huge comeback. When thinking about gender discrimination, our minds naturally assume that women are the ones being discriminated against.
