Essay on I Became A Fireman Or A Police Man

I never wanted to be a fireman or a police man. The first career I wanted was to be a furniture designer. (When I was 8 I built a very ugly stool out of some scrap wood my dad let me use.) Then, when I was like 10, I wanted to be an architect. Then I wanted to be a doctor. Then I became an engineer. As a kid, I knew what an architect did. I didn’t know what an engineer did. The dad in The Brady Bunch was an architect. (The dad in Leave it to Beaver was an Engineer, but I didn’t know that at the time.) My high school French teacher was one of my favorite teachers. Her husband was an architect. He designed their house. He hired me one weekend to help paint his office. I hadn’t thought of that in a long time. I really liked biology class and wanted to be a doctor. In my mind, doctors were rich and I wanted to be rich. I admired the doctors on the TV show MASH. I liked taking care of the sick animals on our little ranch. Then I thought about all the time doctors have to spend in school (like 8 years after getting a bachelor’s degree) and the reality of the day to day situation hit me. Doctors don’t really seem to be very happy at work.

I have also always toyed with the idea of being a teacher. For that job, I was thinking more about the day-to-day job of being a teacher, rather than the school requirements. Teachers in the US are not paid much. I saw my mom, I saw my own teachers. I think they were happy working with kids, and I think I could be happy working with kids, though…
