I attended the American Landscapes performed by Oklahoma State University Symphony Orchestra and Dr. Thomas Dickey conducted the orchestra. The concert was held at the Serentean Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. At the concert, I was an amateur, listener to this type of music. I had never witnessed a live performance of this musical style before. I would consider myself to be a passive listener. I listened to the performance with great effort and tried to pick out detail. Due to my lack of knowledge before participating in this course, I was unable to precisely, dissect and have full understanding of all the musical detail displayed. I feel that this experience exposed and enhanced my musical knowledge and I will be more aware of key elements in the production at my next exposure. There were five different pieces performed, consisting of The Star-Spangled Banner, by John Stafford Smith; To Dust, by Adam O’Dell; The Nantucket Fling, by Ernst Bacon; Music from the Film Score Our Town, by Aaron Copland; and Symphony No. 2 in D Major, by Howard Henson. Symphony No.2 consisted of three individual movements, Adagio- Allegro moderato, Andante con tenerezza, and Allegro con brio.
The orchestra was made of an abundance of instruments that gave it the power and detail it expressed. It was made up of various string instruments, such as the violin, viola, cello, and bass. Woodwind instruments including the piccolo,…
