On December 3, 2016 I attended a Holiday Concert at Temple College’s Mary Alice Marshall Performing Arts Center. This concert was performed by the Temple Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Fairlie. The Temple Symphony Orchestra’s 23rd Holiday Concert featured Grammy award winning tenor, Dann Coakwell, and soprano, Teri Johnson. Temple College’s voice instructor, Teri Johnson, soprano, performs all over the south and east. “Ms. Johnson is a versatile lyric coloratura soprano achieving critical acclaim from publications such as Opera News, the Washington Post, and the Tulsa World for her ‘powerful stage presence’ and ‘gorgeous voice’ in roles.” (program, pg.9.) “Dann Coakwell, tenor, has been praised as a ‘clear-voiced and eloquent . . . vivid storyteller’, with a ‘gorgeous lyric tenor that could threaten or caress on the turn of a dime’” (program, pg.11.) Coakwell has worked with many different conductors all around the world such as, Helmuth Rilling, Masaaki Suzuki, William Christie, and many more. Under these conductors, Coakwell has performed internationally and nationally. “Specializing in the Evangelist and tenor roles of J.S. Bach, Coakwell frequently performs the composer’s major oratorios—St. Matthew Passion, St. John Passion, Christmas Oratorio, and Mass in B-minor—as well as many of Bach’s cantatas.” (program, pg.11.)
