On December 3, 2016 I attended a Holiday Concert at Temple College’s Mary Alice Marshall Performing Arts Center. This concert was performed by the Temple Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Thomas Fairlie. The Temple Symphony Orchestra’s 23rd Holiday Concert featured Grammy award winning tenor, Dann Coakwell, and soprano, Teri Johnson. Temple College’s voice instructor, Teri Johnson, soprano, performs all over the south and east. “Ms. Johnson is a versatile lyric coloratura soprano achieving critical acclaim from publications such as Opera News, the Washington Post, and the Tulsa World for her ‘powerful stage presence’ and ‘gorgeous voice’ in roles.” (program, pg.9.) “Dann Coakwell, tenor, has been praised as a ‘clear-voiced and eloquent . . . vivid storyteller’, with a ‘gorgeous lyric tenor that could threaten or caress on the turn of a dime’” (program, pg.11.) For women performers of the orchestra, they are expected to wear all black, such as black pants or long skirt, along with a black blouse or black dress coat. For men, it is expected to wear a tuxedo. However, for the audience of this specific concert, there is no expected dress code. The audience typically tends to dress more formal for classical concerts, and more casual for “pops” concerts. After observing the attire etiquette throughout the concert, the performers had met the expectations. The performers, both men and women, dressed in all black, looking very similar as a large group. However, the audience differed slightly. Half of the audience was dressed very formal, women in blouses and dresses, and men in tuxedos. The other half was dressed very casual, including jeans, t-shirts, etc. Because this was a Holiday Concert, there were many people of the audience dressed in Christmas themed outfits, such as Santa
