Gender Stereotypes At Springfield College

Superior Essays
Here at Springfield College where I attend as a female student, I have realized that there is severe overtreatment, as well as under treatment, but sometimes even equal treatment of males compared to females in the classroom/labs, dorms, gym, cafeteria, extracurricular activities, and any other places where institution sponsored events occur. There happens to be a greater amount of cases where males are treated superior to women, rather than the other way around or equal- in my opinion. Granted, everyone’s opinions will be different and their perspectives on each situation may change, but by living here for a semester I’ve got a good grasp of what I believe is going on.

In this institutional aspect men and women are equal because there is around the same amount for each gender, taking into consideration the sports. However, the physical act of sports is a different story. Men are viewed as extremely superior with athletics even though the college tries to get rid of that by making women superior in their own way. For example, Springfield college offers a numerous amount of intramural sports. There is indeed a requirement for them in order to attempt to make everyone feel equal. The team must have a certain number of men and women depending on the sport and that minimum number is always equal for both genders although their can be more. For that aspect, they’re equal. But, I’ve noticed that from watching a few of my roommates’ flag football games that the ball is passed to men when the opportunity is available. Even if they acknowledge that there is a completely open woman on the field, they tend to go out of their way to throw it to the men. This can show that men are seen as faster, stronger, more agile, more coordination, faster reflexes, etc. It is seen because when they do not have to throw to a woman, they don’t. Sometimes they have to because in the rules it says that woman need to be involved a certain amount of times so once they reach the minimum requirement, women are disregarded. The women’s side of the floor has four showers, four toilets, and six sinks while the men’s side only has two showers, two toilets, and two sinks. There is an equal amount of each gender on the floor, so it shows that women are favored in this aspect. However, an aspect where men are superior to women in the dorm is casual talk. When talking in the common area on my floor with my floor mates, I have realized that I tend to get interrupted more than men and I see the other women on my floor do as well. This shows that men are seen as having more authority, and even more respect. Another aspect where men are superior is the fact that here at Springfield College there is a separate dorm only for men called Alumni Hall, but there is not a separate dorm just for women. I could see that being fair if there was a significantly greater amount of men than women attending but it is almost equal. During accepted student’s day, I learned that Springfield College is comprised of 52% males and 48% females- making the difference only a slight

Negative attitudes and stereotypes are a part of society; they become bigger issues when these thoughts and beliefs turn into actions, such as discrimination and aggression. Over the last decade strides have been made to change societal ideals and norms but research shows discrimination among particular groups remains high. The results of a study done by The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force shows that members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community experience high rates of discrimination and violence (Grant et al., 2011). Theories on the formation of attitudes and stereotypes include Social Learning, Social Cognition, Implicit Association. Resent studies have started to examine the effects media can have on attitudes…

It goes on to explain how school manipulate the size and number of their men’s non-commercial sports to keep the number of male participants down and how it is counterintuitive to the goals expressed by Title IX. The article continues that Title IX was never meant to be an affirmative action law, but rather “like Title VI and Title VII, Title IX is an anti-discrimination statute” and has just been twisted to become different than what it was originally intended to be. The article finally proposes some long and short-term solutions to the problems it presented (Dubois, 1999). This source is credible because it is a peer reviewed paper with relevant information regarding the cutting of men’s teams’ funding and discusses errors with football being such a big…

Sexism has been a major factor in American history and still is today. Although women are treated more equally today than they did in the past, we can still see some differences in the way men and women are looked upon as. With studies further looking into sexism and the way men and women are treated can help us end this “war”, that is if it ever will end. If you look in John Updike’s short story A&P, you can understand how people can envision the story as a sexist writing. In paragraph 13 Lengel comes out and says “Girls, this isn’t the beach.”…

“Women have it harder than men… Women aren’t treated equal… Society is dominated by men”. Has society even thought that maybe men don’t have it as easy as society thinks? Society has focused too much on women's rights movement that they forgot about men. Media has affected gender roles throughout generations.…

In sport today I believe women are treated in an unfair way to their male counterparts. Sport is controlled by the media in this century and women are looked at as sexual objects rather than for their talent like men are. The women are also then expected to wear skimpy clothing not because it’s better for the sport but because of marketing. Professional female athletes are seen as inferior to their male counterparts and therefore don’t get as much media coverage. Women athletes play the exact same games, train equally as hard, yet are still getting paid a large amount less than men.…

Stop raising boys and girls, just raise kids! In a perfect world, I think there would be very few differences in terms of how we parent boys and girls. Many researchers have identified fundamental imbalances between girls and boys: the structure of the brain, child development, their perceptions of the world. Take out all of that, you’ll find that boys and girls are not that different.…

For the Sake of Womankind Gender roles have changed throughout the course of history, yet the struggle for true equality amongst men and women still prevails. Women continue to be viewed as the minority group, where being born a girl automatically lowers her social standard. This social standard dictates how she is respected, how she is viewed, and what opportunities she is given. Efforts have been and are made to blur the distinction between being a male or a female, but the amount of progress is not enough to say that both genders are equal. Some people may say otherwise, but as a whole, women will never be the equivalent of man in the eyes of American society.…

Expectations Why does society commonly believe that one ascriptive characteristic of your identity makes you privileged? Are not all people mistreated by society at least at one point or another, “With respect to the most basic moral values such as justice, ‘we should regard all human beings as our fellow citizens and neighbors’ (Nussbaum, 117).” Being a young white woman I have found no privilege in todays’ society because I have been treated unfairly at work, racially profiled, social profiled, and disrespected by my male counterparts in my everyday life. To begin with, women are not treated the same way as males in the United States “Men’s unwillingness to grant that they are overprivileged in the curriculum, even though they may grant…

The sport all together is the same. Everyone plays by the same rules and restrictions, but there’s just too much of a difference between the genders in sports. Men and women have different playing styles and they do not mix well. They have been separated for a very long time and they should remain that way for many of the reasons that I have listed above. There will always be women that can beat men in their respected sports and vise versa, but the game is setup the way it should remain for women to play competitive against women and men to play against other…

Gender Inequality in Professional US Soccer In the United States, the professional opportunities, which are available for women to play soccer, are small compared to men. Not only that, but after having more success in competitive play, they do not earn an equal or higher pay than men as well. Soccer has been primarily a male dominated sport with more opportunities and funds allotted for development, earnings, and venues. Even though the US Women’s Soccer team has great success and support from the soccer community, they continue to struggle with equality in regards to their earnings, recognition, and the type and degree of punishment they receive when breaking rules or guidelines.…

Women And Equality In The Workplace Gender Equality is the most common issue which has come across at the workplace in which women are treated inferior than the other men employees. It has been noticed than women are being paid less than men, and there is a male-dominant crowd in the workplaces. For no reason women are set apart when they are equally intelligent as men. It is very casual that women are also capable of doing a particular job as men.
