I can’t say that I fully agree with Sandy ro Grace, but I would have to side more with Sandy. We have to respect individuals rights to privacy and should strive to achieve informed consent. My wife read a book called the incredible Henrietta Lacks.…

Medical care is a growing issue as time as progressed. How doctors care for their patients, and how patients react to the care received is sometime a great concern. Nowadays it is harder to perceive any type of care for patients with mental health issues, comparing to a few decades ago, where good medical care for any minority was hard to come by. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot follows the life of Henrietta Lacks and her lack of medical care that caused her death, and how the medical world used her cells for success. On the other hand, It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini highlights Craig Gilner’s time in a psychiatric ward after he checks himself in.…
Do you think we can sacrifice few persons to make others happier? I don’t think so. Many people might say yes to this question because no one thinks that you or your family will be the few persons to be sacrificed and logically, help thousands of people by sacrificing few people might sound nice for human beings. However, scientists may make poor decisions because of their passion for discovery and we cannot forget about the respect for fundamental human rights. In the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks written by Rebecca Skloot, she writes about experiments back in the mid-twentieth century when she says, “They recruited hundreds of African-American men with syphilis, then watched them die slow, painful, and preventable deaths, even…
When reading an author’s work of art, the author writes with the intention of a purpose. Whether that is to inform the audience with knowledge about current events or to persuade them into thinking a specific way. William Stafford states, “but writing itself is one of the great, free, human activities.” , from his except A Way of Writing is one of the few aspects of writing. In the book unSpun: Finding Facts in a World of Disinformation written by Kathleen Jamieson and Brooks Jackson, they discuss the spin in the world; spin which is deception.…
Enjoy family and friends, make the most use of having friends and family. You should enjoy every minute that you spend with family and friends because they will not always be there for you. One example I noticed in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is that Deborah and Rebecca started to have a growing friendship and Rebecca had cherished it. Eventually though Deborah had passed away and this is would explain why you should cherish all the moments and make the most of having friends and family.…
Legal, Moral, and Ethical Issues: Henrietta Lacks As cited in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks: A Reader’s Guide, Ms. Skloot chooses to write Herietta’s story by taking readers along with her in her reporting journey. I believe Skloot respects the power of emotion and the need to humanize all characters and scenes throughout the story to gain a better understanding of the ethical issue behind HeLa cells. Just as Skloot highlights many times throughout the story not only in relation to Henrietta but other patient as well, clinicians may often forget the person behind sampling and lab work. Therefore, if the reader is able to see the reactions of the Lacks’ family to others, including Skloot, he/she may be able to empathize more with the…
In today's society, you often see divides among social classes, there are always gonna be superior groups and inferior groups that don’t understand or get along with each other, it’s inevitable. There are examples of divides in social classes in every time period. Flash all the way back to 1620, 397 years ago, and it’s even present all the way back then. In the narrative, “The Life of Mary Jemison”, and the Hannah Dustin poem, there are multiple examples of divides between the Europeans and Indians. Both pieces demonstrate the complexity of their relationship due to language barriers, unknown territory and how big of an impact these limitations had.…

In History “In History”, by Jamaica Kincaid, weaves together the stories of Christopher Columbus, George Clifford, and Carl Linnaeus so that the reader may understand why the author is questioning her own history and those who are like her. Kincaid questions us, “What is History? Is it a Theory? Is it an Ideal” She answers these questions through the stories of these three men as they come across and label foreign people, lands, or plants. Kincaid implies that the act of identifying and labeling unfamiliar with familiar terms are taken from these men 's subjective lives.…
The 1960s was a tumultuous decade for the United States. Along with the escalation of the Vietnam War, this decade was rocked by the Civil Rights movement and the second wave of the Feminist movements, creating an immense amount of social tension. As a result, people turned to politically-charged music, predominantly Rock n’ Roll, to release their frustrations. However, an equally important musical genre, Soul, was left in the background. Despite the fact that Soul music was not as popular in the United States, artists such as Aretha Franklin released many politically-charged songs that advocated for social justice.…

This is a quotation taken from Katherine Mansfield’s short story ‘’The Voyage’’. The story is about a young girl called Fenella, after the death of her mother she went with her grandmother to move in her Grandparent’s house in Picton, which is inspired from Mansfield’s personal life when she had to move out from her home in Wellington, New Zealand to London, England. Mansfield uses imageries, metaphors, and the setting to convey the two main ideas of darkness and light and the transformation of Fenella from innocence to adulthood. This quotation sheds light on those ideas as well as Fenella’s feelings and the characterization of the grandmother. Despite Fenella’s young age, she clearly understands the whole situation about her mother death…
