Because a purpose is self-defined, it can take a long time to realize, understand, and come to terms with this definition. I Am the Universe follows the coming-of-age story of a young girl who is tasked with a seemingly simple question: “Who are you?”. As she struggles to answer this question and cope with her own misfortunes, she begins to unravel the secrets of the universe and the hidden significance of normality. A central theme in this book is that everyone has a purpose that is intertwined with those who surround them.
Upon an initial self-examination, one can find themselves comparing attributes with others. Kit, a twelve year old girl, often feels extraordinarily average. Many people define themselves by traits that they possess that are outside of their control. This sense of identity is often fixed, and the perceived fluidity of their identity evolves as a result of their experiences changing their perception of the world. This is exemplified in Lauren Slater’s “Three Spheres”, which tells the story of the author’s own experience with mental illness and how it shaped the course of the rest of her life. Although a person’s nature does impact their personality, as shown in the innate quality of Slater’s mental illness, the way that they are nurtured also has a great impact. “Three Spheres” best shows the character of the author due to its illustration of her experience and the impacts of both the way she was…

She was young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines bespoke repression and even a certain strength. But now there was a dull stare in her eyes, whose gaze was fixed away off yonder on one of those patches of blue sky. It was not a glance of reflection, but rather indicated a suspension of intelligent thought. There would be no one to live for during those coming years; she would live for herself. There would be no powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature.…

Whimsical, Wild and Weird Jack Kerouac is a writer known for his different view of everyday life. It was different back when he started writing books, in the forties, and it still is different, or at least uncommon. Jack didn’t really want a regular life; it just didn’t suit him. He gave it a try, according to Biography.com Editors, in “Jack Kerouac.” From April 2017, he was forced out of football after an injury, so he quit college, and was discharged 10 days into being a marine, so I don’t think he found he was satisfied with the way his life was turning out.…
