At first look, it was displeasing to see the man behind the cards was a stranger and that Ed did not ask about why his father had to die. Later, when reflecting, it was evident that the man who was behind everything was named Markus Zusak, when Ed meets him he describes himself. This is the reason Ed asks if he was real. The ending was also interesting because it connected to the beginning of the novel. For example, in the end of the novel Ed talks about how he wanted to write about it and start with the line, “This gunman is useless.” and that is the very first line in the novel. Also, in the beginning, at the trial, the gunman told Ed that every time he looked in a mirror that he was looking at a dead man. In the end of the novel, we see the gunman in Ed’s taxi asking him if that is what he still sees. The similarities in the beginning and end were compelling because Ed’s story started with the gunman and now he has come back to contribute to the lesson Ed learns from his experience as the messenger. Another example, in the beginning Ed says, “I’m typical of many of the young men…” This shows he is a very ordinary person, this continues through the book until the end when Markus Zusak, the man behind the cards tells him that he changed because he learned to stand up and help the people in
