I am reading It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini and I am on page 122. This book is about a teenage boy named Craig Gilner who is struggling to succeed in his high school career while he fights depression. Starting in seventh grade, Craig’s dream is to be accepted Manhattan’s Executive Pre-Professional High School, but once he is accepted something changes. He quickly realizes school is not going to be as easy at he thought, and starts to make irresponsible choices. Along with his best friend Aaron, Craig starts to see life outside his studying bubble. As his depression progresses, Craig begins to see a therapist. During therapy, Craig discusses his life when he was younger with Dr. Minerva. As he talks with Dr. Minerva, he says his dream job as a child was to become a mapmaker. Craig also makes the bold decision to tell Nia, Aaron’s girlfriend, about his …show more content…
One thing that may happen is Craig will feel the same way as he does when he was taking his medicine regularly. Craig claims he feels the medicine working right after he takes the first dose even though it is not supposed to take for a few weeks. “The Zoloft worked, and it didn’t take weeks-it worked as soon as I took it that first day.” (Vizinni 113). He may be able to make himself think he does not need the medicine and still feel alright because some of the affects are in his head. His therapy also might be working to make him have better mental stability, so he might not be as dependent on it. Another thing that might happen is Craig might become depressed again. He might start to notice he needs to start taking the medicine again, but does not want to admit it to himself or anyone else. It seems like if someone tries to help him, he just ignores him or her and tries to do problem solving himself. If he truly does need to be taking his medicine, he will be more depressed and withdrawn from everyone
