I Am On The Bus By Hikmet Interpretation

Decent Essays
This is really interesting question that I believe could start a good discussion! I never really thought I would like the bus, however as I have taken it more to Seattle, I have grown to appreciate it. I never really liked the thought of being around a bunch of people I do not know in an enclosed space. The more that I have taken it to football games and baseball games, I find it almost relaxing. Once I am on the bus, I just people watch and look out the window and I am able to appreciate the views that Seattle has to offer us. The theme of this poem really made me reevaluate all of the things that I take for granted in life. Hikmet had to wait so long to be released from prison which made him not realize the simplest things in life.

The common theme of both the story and the poem are that it’s okay to still do old fashioned things. In the story, the man follows in his grandfather’s steps of clearing the long sidewalk of snow for kids who walk to school everyday. He mentions that most of the houses now in his town don’t even have sidewalks because no one walks anywhere anymore. Instead, people just worry about cleaning off their driveways so their cars can get to the road safely. Even though it is a hassle for him, he feels like it is his occupation to do so since he lives right by a high school and a elementary school.…

Is life on the road for everyone? Life on the road is not for everybody which in theory is understandable because traveling can be unpredictable. People who do not like to travel have their reasons; some people may say that they dislike traveling because they find it to be boring, while others will say that traveling causes them to stress due to fear of the unknown and therefore would rather avoid unnecessary worries and fears. There is also many thrill-seeking people who find that traveling the open-road is adventurous and that it gives them a sense of freedom because they are not tied down to any one specific area.…

This poem is about racism and discrimination. In this situation, the reason why I choose this poem was because the author has a positive attitude and I also enjoy this poem. From this poem, I learned how people discriminate each other in different forms and ways like when people talk behind your back or even force you to do something that you don’t really like. It reminds me of a previous experience I encounter, which was getting a perfect score on a test, and my classmates accused me of cheating. Therefore, I do not really like this part of the poem, because it reveals the unpleasant side of human beings.…

This poem was a sonnet written in 1936 composed of iambic pentameter and free verse, published in 1941 a few month before the United State of America entered World War 2. “The Gift Outright” received special attention when Frost recited it at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy on January, 1961. Frost had originally planned to recite a poem titled “Dedication” that he had written for the event. However, because of the glare of the sun and his poor eyesight; he was unable to read his copy of the poem and instead recited “The Gift Outright.”. I choose this poem because the title catch my attention and I’m a big fan of history.…

Great job on your post! I also chose Romanticism as the literary movement that "Fast Car" represents, so it was nice to read your thoughts on why you believed this song best represents this specific "ism". I loved it when you explained how your second quote referenced the freedoms of a bird. I had never thought about it like that. When you mentioned this, it changed my perspective on this song lyric (just like Brielle had mentioned).…

Claude McKay’s “If We Must Die” is a bold poem written during an eventful time for civil rights history, the Harlem Renaissance. During the Harlem Renaissance the African American community endured extreme racism and degradation. McKay wrote this poem with the intent to display his feelings as an immigrant who moved to America for a better life but instead was thrown into a situation where he was treated like an animal instead of a person. He chose to write this poem in the form of a Shakespearean sonnet, which ironically is a more common form for the writing of love poems and “if we must die” is nothing of the sort.…
