Carmen Ott's Classroom Observation

Superior Essays
I am observing at Eugene Field Elementary which is located in Hannibal, Mo. I am in Carmen Ott’s Classroom; she has a total of 16 students. A new student just came to the school this last week, so now out of the sixteen students there are seven of the students are girls and now the other eight students. Though there are also another three students that come in for a certain amount of time. In those three students two of them are girls and one of them are boys. Currently, all the ages for these students in Mrs. Ott’s classroom is from ages five to six years old. The students social, cognitive, and language behavior is different from one another. Out of all the students, mostly all of them will just go up to one another and start talking …show more content…
Ott tries to get enough attention to each student, but that doesn’t always happen because of something going on in the classroom. If a student is acting up or not following the rules, then he/she might get more attention than some of the others during that time. Depending on the day and time depends on how much attention is adult initiated and child-initiated, quite a bit of the attention is given by the Mrs. Ott. She calls on students to answer the problems or questions. Other times are child-initiated because they are trying to get the teachers attention for either tattling on someone, they need an answer to something, or they are wanting to go somewhere. From what I seen, it is mostly because someone is bothering them or they need to go to the bathroom or get a drink. Another thing that I have seen is the students who can’t sit still for very long get bored, so they start misbehaving and not listening. For example, a student who is gets done with their assignment early and Mrs. Ott tells them to read a book. Well the book does not keep them still for long, so they think they can get up and start doing something that they are not supposed to …show more content…
With them learning more words each day they are in school, they are learning to use more pronouns, plurals, and subject/verb agreements correctly. They use pronouns and plurals pretty good, but there are a few of times that I have noticed that they used them incorrectly. Correctly, what they are working on is their subject/verb agreements. They don’t always use the subject/verb that they are supposed to. When they are trying to write something that Mrs. Ott asked them to write, that is when they have a little trouble with them. But the more they learn about that, the better they will get a the subject/verb

The classroom setting is for, four-year-old preschool aged children. The idea behind the preschool comes from Piaget’s theory that children learn by a process of adaptation, assimilation, and then accommodation. During the first step, they interpret new stimulation in ways that fit with what they already know. As the new information assimilates, the existing knowledge modifies and creates a better match. Lastly, the child’s understanding gradually changes from the interaction with the environment.…

While observing at P.S 105 X in The Bronx, Mrs. Downs’s second grade classroom is a surprisingly calm, regular classroom with 25 students. The classroom was filled with the students, teacher and paraprofessional. Usually, there is another co-teacher in the classroom; however, she was on maternity leave. When entering the classroom, I could see on the other side of the room, against the windows the wall was filled with books, as well as bins in the back of the classroom. The wall is switched out each month with different books that go along with the unit.…

Hypothesis Ms. Mundatuchundayil or also referred as Ms. M teaches second grade at St. Vincent de Paul. I have been observing this class for about seven months about every Wednesday. This is a Catholic setting where I had to attend Mass and was allowed to talk about religious views so it’s different than most practicums I hear about in class. From my observations, I hypothesize that Ms. M focuses on cultural responsive, DAP, and children’s behavior in order to manage and organize the classroom. Cultural responsive involves poverty, guidance, and linguistic competence which means interplay of genes, development, culture, and experience that defines common humanness and individual personality (Gartrell, 2014).…

I found it quite interesting how in public schools in the Chicago area I have experienced seeing how teachers treat children differently. Inside an early start Pre-k class beforehand the teacher and her assistant gave me a bit of information about the students to retain when I had to work with them one-on-one. Furthermore in the process of them informing me of their behaviors, what to expect, what not to expect, and reasons why some have some sorts of trouble do to their families background. During my early years of school, it is fair to say that I was a handful. I could never sit still and focus throughout the entire duration of a lesson. There was not a day that went by that I did not get reprimanded by a teacher- usually for talking or disrupting the class. It was not because I wanted to be an obstreperous student, I simply lost focus of what was being taught on the board. Usually within the first ten or fifteen minutes, I grasped the concept but still had to sit through the next forty-five minutes of the teacher trying to lead the other students to grasp it through redundant examples.…
