Masculinity In The Film Creed

I am not usually one for boxing movies, because I do not understand why people would want to get hit multiple times and have people watching. Especially at the end when Adonis’ right eye is completely swollen shut, that is not something I could every imagine thinking going through is a good idea. However, boys are taught at a young age to be tough and that fighting is a normal thing. You always see shows where boys get in fights and their fathers are all happy about it and the mother is all upset about her little boy getting hurt. Boys are taught that fighting is a way to be masculine. In the movie Creed, the idea of masculinity is a huge part of the movie. Michael B. Jordan who plays Adonis Johnson is an example of Orthodox masculinity. He posses all key traits of hegemonic masculinity except for race since he is an African American. Before I read it made me feel like Bianca and Mary Anne were only supporting characters in Adonis. “ The movie features just two women; Mary Anne Creed, and Bianca, both supporting characters who appear only in a handful of scenes each.” You could have taken Bianca out of the movie and it would not have made a difference. However, Mary Anne is a different story, she has a bigger role because of how she takes Adonis in, but she is still just a women who is supporting and taking care of a man. However, after reading the article it changed my opinion a little but not completely. Yes, it has a message that women do not need to dress in tight shirts and short skirts to catch the male’s eyes, and it also shows that women are strong enough to overcome hardships without a man in their life. Bianca is dealing with her progressive healing loss and is doing it without a man. Bianca is showing her independence, which many other movies need to show women
