My Basics Of Writing: I Am Not A Writer

Decent Essays
I am not a writer. I do not enjoy writing. I do not do it in my free time. I have been assigned essays and papers over the years of my educational career, and though I may get good grades on them, that does not mean I enjoyed writing them. For school assignments I have written everything from argumentative essays to memoirs. I think I could have a talent as a writer if I wanted to, if I put my mind to it. Sometimes I feel like I come up with some clever word choice, or story plot, but I do not like writing. Prior to this class, the english/literature classes I took were middle school language arts, where I first learned the basics of writing. English 9, which was more of an entertaining learning class for me. And American Literature, which …show more content…
Mr. Rase is an amazing teacher that made the class an environment in which I could have fun as well as learn. I made some great new friends and felt comfortable reaching out to my classmates and teacher for help when I needed it. As I said in the beginning I don’t enjoy writing very much but now that I have completed the class I feel that I will not hate writing essays as much as I used to because I’ve gotten a lot better at them. I learned a lot of valuable information that I will take with me through life. I’m sad that the semester is ending because I do not want to take the class I signed up for next semester. I’m happy with the way my grade in this class is going to end up. Overall it is a really easy class to pass, especially because extra credit was offered for all the essays, which really helped me do good on them. I do not enjoy writing any more than I did when I began the class, but I no longer hate english and writing classes. I hope to do this good in my future writing classes. Thank you Mr. Rase for allowing me to have fun, make new friends, and for giving me really good grades on everything. You’re my favorite

A lot of people enter your class with preconceived notions of soon-to-come “failing grades” and lots of stress. I was actually looking forward to your class. Going into Honors English, I was hoping I’d get you as my teacher. It’s not very nice to say, but I let out a little sigh of relief when I saw your name on my schedule and not Ms. Wentworth’s. This is all about honesty, though.…

The Real Writer, says that enjoying writing is more of an “agonistic” type of thing. This means that it is not something you are obsessed with, it’s a love-hate relationship. This is important because it emphasizes that people don’t usually LOVE writing, it is more of a fire that burns inside them. “I believe that I write because I am driven to do so—driven by a will to write (Allen 25).” Basically, writing is not some kind of “gift from the gods” or natural talent.…

My tenth-grade experience summed up in one word would be “impactful”. It impacted me in a way that my previous school years could never compare to. The past few years in school involved compliments from teachers who believed I had the work ethic and the smarts to be put in an honor’s class. Only for them to never put me in an honor’s class. The phrase “you should be in the honor’s classes” rung repeatedly in my head to the point where it didn’t seem like a compliment anymore, it seemed like a constant jab at the fact that I wasn’t in the honor’s classes.…

Writing was not a subject that held my interest in high school. Throughout the last twelve years I have found myself having to write letters, proposals, and business correspondence for my employers. I would complete the assignment and move on to the next task. Deciding to further my education I enrolled in Daytona State College and my first class was your ENC 1101. I have seen a change in my pre-class writing style; I have honed my skills, and the different techniques I have learned while taking this course have only improved my writing style.…

My English professor made me write a minimum of five pages for an essay and I never wrote over three pages since high school. This course was a challenge for me, but it also taught me the value to writing. The more papers I wrote in college made my views change on writing. Writing became a secondary voice for me, it wasn’t difficult for me to write about what I knew or either what was near and dear to my heart. Although I respect writing, it is still something that I still struggle with till this day.…

My earliest memory of literacy is sitting around my daycare provider during story time, while she read us books. After story time we would be allowed to get our own books from the library. Although I could not read at the time, I still enjoyed looking at the pictures and making up my own story to go with it. When it came time to learn how to read, I was sort of impatient. I can remember having problems with phonics because I did not want to take my time to sound out words; I wanted to just be able to recognize the word immediately.…

When it comes to writing for either a class or for my own enjoyment, I never thought of what I actually was good at doing as a writer. I just wrote what came to mind. Now that I’ve given it a thought, I’ve realized that I am consistent in being able to write in complete sentences. They may not always flow or fit together as well as they should but they are complete sentences. Writing is unquestionably hard for me.…

I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…

If you were to ask me about my high school writing experience, I would tell you that I did not have much experience. We did not have any classes at my school that were specifically writing classes. At my high school, we just had regular English classes where we would occasionally do a few papers in. My English teacher senior year was a great person, but did not necessarily teach us a lot about proper styles of writing papers. Coming into college English, I did not feel well prepared with what to expect for a college level writing class.…
