I Am Naturally A Compassionate Person Analysis

Improved Essays
I am naturally a compassionate person, so I thought this task would not be challenging. However, I was wrong. I tried not to limit myself to one act of compassion and to do this I had to be more aware of my surroundings and the needs of others at all times. Which was a challenge in itself because, I soon realized the challenges of being compassionate all of the time. Suggesting that trying to help others through their suffering has the potential to cause suffering to the helper. Also insinuating that there can be psychological costs of being too compassionate.
To aid in alleviating a specific suffering I decided to listen to the needs of every “beggar” I crossed paths with. I am naturally a compassionate person, so I already do this. However,

Where Singer's guideline dictates, “If it is in our power to prevent something very bad happening, without thereby sacrificing anything of comparable moral significance we ought to do it” (147). Narveson withstands that there is a division between principles in the abstract to be weighted against potential outcomes and policies that are “pursued in the real world, (where) facts cannot be ignored” (145). Further, what we are committed to do (justice) and what might be ethically virtuous for us to do, charity. Resisting arguments that we should compel others into action, Narveson states that while it is virtuous to aid to others, it is never it is never morally tolerable to force someone to be charitable. Charity depends on empathy and is an activity that flows from the heart.…

My character is the reason I feel the urge to help others all the time. My character has helped me in many ways. Earlier this year, a women whom I worked with –and was friends with- died suddenly in a car accident. Even though I was very upset, I calmed myself down and took it upon myself to inform my other colleagues who had yet to find out. I was able to be strong and comfort them and the woman’s…

Hi Elizabeth, thank you for your summary of "Compassion in the Landscape of Suffering” it was concise as you mentioned all the main points of the article. As Kendra also commented, it was good that you included what the article was missing. Depression is often accompanied by self-criticism, as seen in the example of Dawn, if we treated ourselves with the same compassion we would treat a friend then we wouldn't be adding to our own suffering whenever we experience something unpleasant. Dr. Neff said, in “The Space Between Self-Esteem and Self Compassion: Kristin Neff at TEDx” (2013), that often we are our own worst enemy, saying and thinking harsh and negative thoughts about ourselves. It was Dawn’s realization that she was adding to her…

This semester I participated in the Mentee Project to explore the ways I incorporate compassion into my work as a leader. Overall the experience both deepened my compassion practice and taught me about group mentee projects. This paper examines what I learned, discusses how I changed, and provides additional reflections on the project. There were three projects to choose from in our Spirituality of Leadership class. One option was to be a mentor with the intention of deepening the spiritual lives and practices of both the mentee and mentor.…

Keller’s statement on page seven, “It stands to reason that injustice is easier to perform against people without the money or social status to defend themselves” (Keller, 2012). People who are poor or lack social status tend to be victims of injustice more than people who are rich and have social leverage. People who are more vulnerable, less money or social pull, are the lower class and are treated as such. If you can’t afford a legal bills or you don’t have any connections than people take advantage of you. Lower class can be treated as if they are less of a person or don’t matter as much.…

Rather, many would feel more compassion towards an old homeless without any jackets who stretch their arms and implore help. Moreover to feel compassion, students might even give money. This example clearly reveals that people always think more about things that they can see, touch, listen, taste, and smell: which means people want to have an actual ‘sense’ of what they experience. This argument will stand to a reason that Keegan threw herself into a rescuing project and watching a dying whale with a huge compassion and…

In her essay, “On Compassion”, Barbara Ascher uses ethos and references to Greek tragedy to demonstrate the purpose of her essay; that compassion can be learned by witnessing the adversity or poverty around you, and that we should not ignore the helpless, because they remind us of our own selves. Ascher also uses examples of current events related to the homeless to emphasize her perspective on compassion. She believes that compassion is something that is learned, not a character trait. Ascher uses pathos to convey the purpose of her essay. Ascher suggested that living in a big city like Manhattan allows you to see more poverty and homelessness than places like Wyoming, and that even though a lot of people in the city want to escape that, those conditions allow them to start to empathize with the homeless.…

My first example of how compassion impacted me is when I saw someone help someone else get caught up on their work when they were absent. This act made me feel many emotions. It made me feel good that I go to a school where kids help out others. This kind act also made me feel grateful for the person helping another child out. After witnessing this act, I wanted to help someone.…

Many people subscribe to this thought, which prompts guilt and embarrassment. However, the thought readily becomes an extremely demanding vise. What do we owe, as a matter of justice, to distant needy strangers? Does justice require, permit, or prohibit special partiality toward local needy strangers or needy folk who are members of our national community? In this essay I would like to discuss the ideas of Peter Singer from a utilitarian perspective and Richard Miller from a consequentialist…

An event which allowed me to step out of my comfort zone back in December of 2015 to help the community was United Way. Ms. Afefe, one of the organizers told me at the beginning, “Don’t quit trying. Your gesture of helping others may not be the biggest nor the smallest, but you are making a difference in the life of another human being.” Ms. Afefe’s words taught me the importance of seeking compassion and understanding in others, even when things may not be going the way we would like it to be. “I don’t strive for happiness as I instead accomplished an act of unselfishness to see the true reality of what it takes to be joyful.”…
