Personal Narrative: My Early Childhood Experience

Improved Essays
I spent my early childhood in a small beautiful hilly town in South India, where there was only one physician for miles. There were always hundreds of people waiting in his clinic to be seen by him. Watching him work tirelessly for the community left a mark on me early on and years later I realized it was his empathy, hard work, and sense of duty that had made a deep impression on my young mind. There was something about this early childhood experience and I have found myself trying to emulate his ideals ever since.

As a teenager, I spent a lot of my summers helping my father on the various projects he undertook. He was the regional head of a non-profit organization, which aimed at uplifting the poor and unfortunate. We worked on educating the children from the local slums, distributing food and

Academics and tests kept me busy through the year, but I discovered a newfound passion for Basketball. During my first year of medical school, I worked and trained hard and by the second year I was made the captain of our team. My first game as captain ended in a loss and after the game, the team got together to reflect on the loss. We had a very honest discussion and I learned an invaluable lesson that day. I learned the value of teamwork and the importance of instilling a sense of confidence in team members. Over a period of time, this helped me hone my leadership and organizing skills. I soon applied these principles at work when we started hospital rotations. I learned that better communication with the nurses fostered an environment of trust and helped make the patients feel reassured. It also minimized error and helped instill positivity in the work environment. I soon realized I would love working in Internal medicine, not only because of its integrative and comprehensive approach but also because of the high level of interaction it fosters between different

Like many children I was placed in child care. The place I attended was a family day care, meaning childcare that includes several children of carious ages and usually occurs in in the home of a woman who is paid to provide it (citation needed). My experience in child care was not bad, I do not remember much of my time at Joeann's; however, I do recall having nap time while Dora the Explorer played on the television, which always frustrated me because I disliked the short Hispanic girl with the backpack and monkey, who repeatedly asked me questions, she should have known the answer. Besides Dora and the time, I had my mouth washed out with soap my time was pleasant at Joeann's, each month she would pick a child to take to McDonald's and shopping.…

I was ten years ago and I can still vividly remember sitting on an old, wooden rocking chair while the words of The Very Hungry Caterpillar trembled off my lips to a room full of second graders. I can recall the eagerness and excitement that filled their little faces as I flipped from page to page. There was an abundance of curiosity and desire to learn in that classroom that made me happy that I decided on skipping recess to read to the younger students. There was a fire that lit in my ten-year-old body that day. That was the day where I finally had an answer to all the “What do you want to be when you grow up?”…

I was 13 years old, just starting off high school, when I realized what this dark cloud that’s been floating over me for the past couple of months really is. It wouldn’t be until more than a year later until I seek out professional help. It started off innocently enough as just a feeling of constant emptiness at the pit of my stomach. It slowly turned into randoms bouts of extreme rage, where I’d take out my anger physically, not just on the walls and mirrors of my childhood home and not just on my family, but on myself. I couldn’t understand why I felt this way, why I wasn’t “normal”.…

My father has been in the military for 30 years. His career has taken him and my family, to every corner of the world. The Air Force is a demanding career path to choose; often the spouse is left with the full weight of the chores to be done on the home front. During the course of my upbringing these duties were, in part, delegated to my sisters and I. While we never experienced “a life of almost tropical idleness’ (CITATION) like the children of Jane Smiley, we became effective and efficient members of our house hold. We learned to respect our house and our family.…

My Birth Story Birth stories have a lasting impact on expectant mothers. Recognizing the influence of birth stories is a key component of informal communication of knowledge about childbirth for expectant mothers. The goals of the birth story interview and discussion are to provide an opportunity to explore the sharing of a birth story as a critical way of knowing within the family and community, and also to promote understanding of the prenatal period and taking-on of the parental role. The topic of storytelling is important to nurses and families, as it allows the integration of the nurses’ experiences into their future nursing practice, which may be invaluable in facilitating authentic and meaningful connections with their patients.…

Uncle Benito had the crazy idea of going to the snow all because my mother had never seen the snow. Twenty some years ago, in search of freedom from a communist country, a war-torn Vietnam sent my parents to America. Unable to continue their high school education, they found themselves working as laborers in a wintry Tyson Fresh Meats. Living in America, my parents were comparable to children, often rely on my brothers and me. Because I was sheltered by parents who weren’t accustomed to the foreign culture and had limited language skills, I didn’t know beyond their knowledge before I began school. As the middle child of immigrant parents, I inherited three English words: yes, no, and hello. Sweaty palms, stomach butterflies, and teary eyes – mentally preparing for the first day of Kindergarten was obnoxiously nerve-wracking.…

Since I was young, having a career where I worked with people was a must when I thought about my future. Thanks to two memorable life experiences, I realized I will receive the most fulfillment in life from becoming a doctor that is heavily involved in patient care. My first memorable healthcare experiences did not come from a doctor, but came from my mother, a dentist. Two years ago, I had a cleaning that she was doing on her own after she just closed her newly opened office for the night. My 10-year-old brother was standing by my side, intently watching my mom stick instruments in my mouth.…

My decision to become a doctor was not based on a single life experience; however, it has been the result of my entire life 's trajectory. From my childhood, I remembered my mother waking up early every morning to go to the bus station and try to get a ride to the hospital where she was doing her medical residency as an Endocrinologist. No matter how sick she felt, every day she got up a leave. It took her many years of sacrificing her family time as well as her night sleeps, but she committed to it and accomplished success. Her commitment and dedication developed on me an immense admiration for medicine as well as a natural instinctive for helping others.…

Adventure fills the soul, and so does Medicine. Our hospital served as a referral center for three neighboring districts with a population of, about 600,000. We were limited medical officers managing patients independently. This came with a lot of responsibility and for the first time, I realized that I was dealing with a patient’s life all by myself.…
