, Jordan Speith! “For me, what I do on the course I want to be secondary to what I do off the course,” as Jordan Speith said. Jordan went through a hard journey to become what he is today. Jordan Speith doesn't always hit perfectly. Well, during round 2 of the masters he didn't have the best aim for his winning shot.…
Like most golfers, Scotty Cameron, a curious Californian kid, was born into golf. His father, an avid golfer, breathed the game. During adolescence, Scotty began making strides in his newfound talent, producing handmade golf putters, alongside his father, "in their garage workshop. " By age 11, he could develop a putter, scratch to play ready unaccompanied. Don Cameron, Scotty's father, told Scotty, "Stick with the game of golf, Scotty.…
Never Give Up I have faced much adversity in my life. The one time in my life where I feel I have faced the most adversity, was in basketball. Throughout my life I have loved playing basketball, but in ninth through eleventh grade in high school I started to hate it, because of all the adversity I faced. There were many factors that were tied up into all of this too. One factor was that I use to be so nervous playing, that it affected my game in a negative way.…
When I came back to school, I had the chance to help a person with deeper problems. When basketball season came again, I tried joining again with the knowledge I might get rejected again but this time I made it. I had to practice every day to which I’m not used to which it surprised me a little. It was also the year with my first experience with an AP class to my schedule was quite filling. This brought my usual 4.0 or higher GPA to a 3.9.…
The past six years, the Rochester girls golf team has made it to State and has finished in either 2nd or 3rd place. There has not been a team in the school history to ever win the team title for girls golf. Coach Hill, Coach Mayer, Morgan Savage, Gabby Isaacks, myself and Lindsay Alewelt would tackle Red Tail Run on a cold, windy course to destroy the odds given to us on October 16th and 17th. Through trust, hard work, motivation, and a little luck, the 2015 Rochester girls golf team vanquished their oppositions and took home a state title. Leaving myself the greatest memory of my High School experience.…
It all started in senior year of high school, a moment where, because of my lack of effort at certain times of my teenage life, I was left with very few options regarding where I could go pursue my education after graduating high school. It is important to emphasize that although I wasn’t sure what exactly I was capable of, I was sure that I was capable of great things and high school failed to inspire me to become the best person I could be. I was disoriented yet self-assured. Luckily, thanks to some thoughtful people who guided me in the right moment, I was able to get in to the Macklin Business Institute at Montgomery College and I was given the opportunity to try out and get recruited to play for MC soccer team. The experiences that followed…
“Oh, Jesus”! I shrieked out as the knife slid through my skin as I endlessly hacked away at the gobs of raw chicken breast I was preparing for tomorrow morning. My face began to pale and every part of my body seemed to go numb, except my mind. Working overtime, my body trailed off into thought, deeming the injury at hand trivial and obsolete. I put the summer before my junior year of high school into perspective.…
The day started like any other, but the same could not be said for how it ended. I arrived at the town golf course, Longshore, about 30 minutes before my tee time. There was slight cloud coverage, minimal wind, and a comfortable temperature. Glints of sun through the clouds periodically illuminated blades of grass, almost signaling for the ball to be hit there. The bentgrass took a deep, rich shade of green from the recent douses of rain.…
Through tenacity and sheer grit, I went from playing golf 2-3 times a year to making a select team at La Salle…
Success is often defined as the accomplishment of one’s goals or objectives. Most people measure life by their successes. Life is a game in which I am constantly measured by myself and others. When I was younger, I based my goals on the expectations of others. I felt enslaved by the goals that were set for me by my superiors – my parents, successful peers, and enthusiastic teachers and mentors.…
At first, I was scared to go to practice for a week because excuses I would make about how I did not belong there, and how it would not have made sense to go after missing a week. Finally, I gained the courage to go to practice. My first day back was rigorous, but I stuck it out for three more days. As long as I have been waiting for this, I had to quiet the team because I could not manage this extracurricular activity into my busy schedule any longer. However, within the four days that I attended practice, I learned much more in two hours than I have in eight hours of school.…
Standing under the familiar radiant heat, the gentle glow on my skin reminded me of the many summers I spent being complacent in Washington. However, surrounding me were kids from numerous families who knew nothing about complacency. They were always moving, always multitasking, and always working; I wondered how migrant farm worker families coped with such a restless lifestyle compared to mine. For the past four summers, I traveled with the St. Anthony Parish youth group on mission trips. Most recently, I spent the last two summers in Bellingham serving the migrant farm worker communities through the Agape Mission program.…
Before I joined the golf team, I was quiet and reserved; however, golf has helped shape me into a better leader and teammate because it has improved my communication with others. As I have met a countless number of people of all different personalities, I feel more confident in how I handle working with other people. On the course, I have learned how to be both a competitor as well as a supportive playing partner. Interacting with a wide range of people has taught me to adapt to different situations because some people are very easy to talk to where others are not so much. When you are with someone for a good five to six hours, you have to learn how to interact with people, which is hard for introverts like me.…
The article, “Practice Doesn’t Make Perfect” by Maria Konnikova, believes and argues the opposite of what most people accept to be true, that practicing something can only get someone so far and that practice alone can never make someone perfect. Maria reported on her interview with a psychology teacher named Zach Hambrick who said he spent at least a thousand hours of practicing golf as a young adult hoping to make it to the PGA, but instead found himself not making the cut for his college golf team. Maria proposes that there are many other factors that play a role in helping someone become extremely talented, or even a professional, in various activities and hobbies in life other than just purely practice. Contrary to popular belief, Maria,…
6. If my friend was experiencing a great deal of stress issues, I would suggest a few things to her. First, I would encourage her to reduce the amount of caffeine, sweets, and fried foods she is consuming. These foods and drinks can trigger and aggravate stress, causing her to be more anxious and compounding the problems. Second, I would suggest for her to drink more water, eat a “rainbow of foods,” and attempt to consume some food every four hours.…
