Swat Valley was said to be a celestial paradise, full of crystal clear waterfalls, divine orchards and heavenly mountains. Many of the men who lived there were educated and theological, while many of the women were illiterate and had a primary role of preparing food and giving birth to children. Malala was born to two very affectionate and passionate parents. Her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai was quite different compared to the other men who lived in Mingora. He was ingrained with a great love for learning, a steadfast sense of equity and a deep ambition to speak out in defense of both. When his first born child turned out to be a girl, he celebrated her and cherished her birth. Usually, when girls are born in Mingora, neighbors commensurate with the parents and the young girls are hidden behind curtains. Ziauddin knew from the minute she was born that she was going to make a difference and thrive as a young woman in Pakistan.
