The new society began with the bacteria itself infecting the humans to be its new host and to be able to continue to live. Yet, Neville and the readers do find out that bacteria can mutate and is adapting to the current world to live without having the bodies of the host dying at an early stage. This also solves the issue for the vampires to be able to go out while it’s dark and also while the sun is out through evolution.
