At the end of high school my GPA was a 3.6 and although my SAT scores were in the 2300s, I feel like what really got me into all the schools I wanted to was my personal statement. I wrote about life as a hispanic and how hard it is to be discriminated in everything you do, and also about some tragic events in my life. I saw better qualified students get rejected as all my acceptance letters came in the mail. Seeing better qualified people not make it into Berkley made me feel like I did not deserve the opportunity given to me.
My grand mother speaks of simpler times when she raised my father and my uncles. Not in her wildest dreams did she ever imagine they would get this far in life after living in a home made of dirt in their childhood. Stories like this give me strength and help me realize that stereotypes and racism can only affect you if you let them affect you.
