I Am Juan Garcia Personal Narrative

Improved Essays
I am Juan Garcia. Mr. Garcia or Sr. Garcia to lots. Sgt. Garcia to a few. And just plain Garcia, to most others.

Oddly enough, I am just Juan to almost nobody. I am a husband, a father, a son, a brother. A teacher, a soldier,

a firefighter, a cook. I am a Compton born kid who spent much of my youth in Homedale, ID. I like old stuff.

Rusty stuff. Stuff that is different. The kind of stuff that you will find at the Thursday night auction in

Caldwell or at an estate sale liquidating the house of some man that lived a long happy life. Worn western

shirts with pearl snaps and single needle threading. An old globe that has a few dents from all the falls in its

past. They are treasures waiting to be discovered. . . hopefully by me. But

Seriously, why are people so in love with it? It tastes like spicy. . . I don’t know, dirt?

It might be that I grew up in a Mexican household and didn’t really have the opportunity to go and eat out in

fancy restaurants when I was younger. It might be that I got absolutely sick of the smell of curry during my

first deployment to the Middle East. The entire staff that worked the DFAC (cafeteria) smell liked curry. They

ate it all the time. On everything. It was everywhere. But, it might very well just be that curry truly tastes bad.

I mean, I have pretty good taste in things and am rarely wrong. So, it might just be everyone else. Like the

emperor wears no clothes. No one actually likes it, but they are afraid of what others will think if they say it out

loud. Well, here it is. Curry taste gross. You shouldn’t even try it. Cause then you might like something that

tastes gross. Yuck.

And I know that this will ruffle some feathers, but I will never own a cat. Cause they’re gross and pee on stuff

and have ringworm and then there’s that whole old cat lady thing and whatnot. I will never paint my toe

Rodney the Porcupine Lazy, large, and lumpy describe the personality and body traits that lie in Rodney, the picnic-crashing porcupine. The spikes lining his back could pierce through anything that they came across. Therefore, he retained the ability to break into sandwich bags or other food storage containers with ease. His chubby body could do as much damage as a bullet, but that only created half the scare.…

My favorite hobby is collecting old paper money. Since I was a teenager, I remember starting to become an aficionado about old currency such as owning one, two, and a ten dollar bill from twenty years ago. The fading of the old ink from the paper makes me want to have it in my own personal collection. Because I like to collect old American money, my favorite American collection is ex-confederate currency from the nineteenth century. The Boston Athenaeum museum has a collection of over six thousand items of ex-confederate currency.…

The objects that I were assigned were the Bandolier bag from the Native American Delaware Tribe, and the Painted elk hide from the Easter Shoshone tribe. Bandolier bags were extremely popular among most Native American tribes, and each tribe expressed their culture through them in a different way. This particular Bandolier bag comes from the Delaware, or Lenape, Tribe. It is estimated that it was created around 1850 C.E., and is crafted with beads on leather hide. This object has two components to it, one being the shoulder drape and the other being the small bag.…

How can a culture that makes something as rich and flavorful as a Shoefly Pie make something as bland as Chicken Pot Pie? I guess it doesn't matter since for some reason it's still so damn good! btw, for people who aren't interbread w/ PA Deautsche relatives, Chicken Pot Pie doesn't really come in a box from the freezer or in a crust for that matter. It's more of a broth and isn't thick with veggies, it's basically chicken, 1/4'd potatos, and big square noodles. It's basically the whitest looking meal ever!!!…

To some people, small amounts of the compounds phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) taste very bitter; other people do not taste these compounds. In 1932, a scientist by the name of Fox was working in a lab with phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) when a colleague complained about the bitter taste of the chemical dust Fox was spreading around. Fox insisted that it was tasteless. To settle the disagreement, he had other colleagues taste the PTC and discovered that it had a strong bitter taste for some people, while others found it tasteless. This led to a large body of research on PTC tasting and what made it possible for some to taste it, while others couldn’t (McDonald 2011.)…

The history of cakes go far back to ancient times, the Egyptians were the first culture to show evidence of advance baking, but the first cakes back in those days were more bread like sweated with honey with nuts and dried fruit added. I as a baker would redo Egyptian cake using a modern cake style, because the ancient Egyptians times are one of the coolest. The author learns the difference between "natural" and "artificial," and shows how chemical flavors such as Methyl anthranilate (one of the first artificial flavors; smells like grapes), created by "flavorists," has become a billion dollar industry and has transformed our eating habits as consumers. He explains that many of the natural and artificial flavors today are made in the same factories, but for some reason, consumers view natural flavor as healthier and are willing to pay a higher price for related products. The author uses statistical data (logos) cited from studies performed by the Institute of Food Research to prove the point that the "manipulation of smell" contributes to the majority of what people claim…
