The Frog In The Well Analysis

I am Italian, Irish, French, British, I also have a bit of Native American in me. Even though I am all these things, I have almost no idea how to speak Italian, or French I don 't know where my ancestors were located or really anything about my heritage besides how to cook Italian meals. The only place I have been is the United States and only 4 States Pennsylvania, New York, California, and Florida. I relate to the story of "The Frog in the Well" because I have no experience of my own culture or heritage, so how can I have any understanding of someone else 's? When discussing other customs, culture, heritage, and religion I try to stay as open minded as possible, because I have a narrow view from how I grew up. I know my experiences will differ …show more content…
The United States has so many different cultures and to coexist with each other there has to be an understanding of the variation of people. Another important example is how in other countries they must know more than one language to graduate high school, however, in the United States immigrants have to learn English to function within our society. Immigrants will mostly populate the United States in the future, so why does our school systems not require a second language? This problem is occurring because we haven 't had progress with really understanding how diverse America is. A lot of the places in the south still have the same beliefs they did for years because of the ideals their families grew up with for generations. My father never lived in the south, however, he has narrow minded views about our society. When he served in Vietnam there was a lot of racism towards Vietnamese, Chinese, and Japanese, if we go out to a Chinese restaurant he will make rude comments about their culture. It offends me and I try to explain to him how ignorant he 's being but because he grew up in a society that blames a whole ethnicity, religion, race, …show more content…
When I was in junior high, my friend who was Mexican came on the bus crying and I was trying to calm him down and have him explain to me why he was so upset. He told me that because they said the swine flu came from Mexico the kids in his class called him dirty, they also said to him that they didn 't want to get sick and that he should go back to Mexico. It really made me view people differently how could kids who are 12, 13 say such racist remarks. This brings me to what I am hoping to learn from this class, I really want to educate myself as much as I possibly can about other customs, cultures, beliefs, religion, practices, so I can educate people who don 't have the right facts and only judge from what they hear or assume. I like to think I have cultural competence but I don 't think I would know until I am placed In another culture and I would like to educate myself and prepare for the day I do. It is very important to me to learn other people 's values because I want to be able to reevaluate my value, grow, change, and have more of understanding of the

I think David Brook`s makes a valid point in “People Like Us” when he states that America isn’t truly diverse. People gravitate to other people that are like themselves. People feel more comfortable surrounded with people that are similar. Self-segregation hinders the growth of diversity that could happen among our nation. If people would branch out of their comfort zones, they could live more diverse lives.…

With different views, cultures, and ethnicities comes many problems. As humans, we are all quick to judge and discriminate against those that are not like us. While it may seem as though it is recent or only happens pretty currently, this is not the case. When people began coming over to America, and even long before it was claimed as America, minorities have been neglected and abused both physically and mentally. Racism was alive and well back in the day as much as it is now.…

Martin Luther King, the social activist who played a key role in the American civil right movement said “Men often hate each other because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they cannot communicate; they cannot communicate because they are separated.” Humans tend too separate from each other by their skin color, economy level, and educational level as well. We humans create walls in order to divide the lower class from the middle and high class. Those walls can be ten feet tall or sometimes those walls are just a creation that we make in our minds.
