Minimum Wage Reflection

The first prompt that Choikam asked us to answer is extremely difficult for me. I’ve answer this question before in the past; back in economics in high school. My high school teacher and classmates discussed about this subject for weeks and we all came to different conclusion and opinions of how the system should work. And I don’t think my opinions has changed since, even with all the new knowledge I’ve gained from the past few weeks. Let me tell you a quick little story that my economic teacher told me. My teacher had a sister that lived in Seattle. She worked at a company for many years and has worked her way up to the top and had many pay raise. Her pay wage was like $18 or 19 an hour. And then later on, as you may know, the minimum wage in Seattle gets increased to $15. People who entered the company as a new employee was already getting a minimum wage of $15. While the teacher’s sister had to work her way up to where she was at for many, many years. The company doesn’t do anything to adjust the inflation of the teacher’s sister wage. I asked my friend about this question recently and he told me that raising the minimum wage would be a huge disadvantage to people who’re buying houses. The federal government would get an increased in their federal income, and the prices for houses would get increased. New homeowners who’re looking for a new homes would have a huge disadvantage as the system would pretty much downplay on their money. Basically, like the story I was telling you guys in the last paragraph, it would cause a huge unfairness to people who have worked so hard on gaining their money, just to have its value be devalued. The current minimum wage in Oregon is $9.75 (Department of Labor) and I believe it should stay that way for awhile instead of raising or decreasing it
