The young girl behind the desk had noticed her assessing her appearance through the windows before she finally pushed through the tinted double doors. “– and I think you’ve made a mistake. Mordecai Asher, he can’t be… He’s been arrested? ”
With little more than a sigh the receptionist rose from behind her station.
“Robin” she called around the partition that separated the foyer from the rest of the station. “There’s a girl here, says she’s after that kid they brought in earlier. It’s his sister by the looks of her.” The implication was clear; the receptionist as easily as anyone else could have, recognised their heritage. It’s no secret that the City of Palmerston precinct had it in for indigenous delinquents.

“You’re here about Mordecai? The boys picked him up just outside of Pinelands. Kid was hiding out near the storm water drains, dangerous place that, when the season’s wet up here.”
“But he hasn’t done anything wrong, surely?” Robin chose to ignore the pitch that twisted the end of her nearly convincing conviction. Instead she invited Esther into a room labelled ‘Interview 1’, sitting herself on one of the identical plastic chairs sat opposite desk. All the furniture was bolted to the floor. Inviting thought Esther; she was overcome with the sense of seriousness that had been previously dismissed by the warmth of Detective Garrity.
The interview room felt more like a cell than a meeting place. Aside from the three chairs surrounding the desk the room would be empty, if not for the watercooler that gurgled in the back corner. The space was far from inviting. It would be stone cold, if not for the blistering heat circulating through the ceiling fan. Robin gestured again for Esther to sit. The woman before her looked younger now than the visitor had originally noted. Perhaps working in law enforcement sped up the ageing process, or maybe growing up in the Darwin sun had wrinkled her fair
