Escaping a prison camp, teaching himself to read Italian from a newspaper, and climbing a mountain in the middle of a blizzard when he was half starved! Do you think you could do these amazing things? Well they are all things the character David did in the novel I am David, written by Anne Holm.
The character David is a very courageous boy. At one point in this intriguing novel (pg.107), he finds himself watching three Italian children playing a game they called Davy Crockett and the Indians. One boy was Davy Crockett while the little girl acted as the person who got captured and the other boy as the bad guy (capturer). After watching the little boy as the “bad guy” tie the little girl up and put her in a shed, he decides to take a nap. David was then awakened by the sound of children sobbing and yelling. He peers over the rock he had slept on and sees that the shed that the little girl was in caught fire! With some quick thinking (described later in this essay), he rescues the girl. Some evidence of this is on page 42. David was going to wait until nighttime to come unto the little town when he thought to himself that a boy walking around town by himself in the afternoon would be much less suspicious than a boy lurking around at night, in addition, he would be able to observe how Italians acted. On page 43, David was thinking about how he was different from everyone else and he was trying to come up with ways to avoid suspicion. He then decides to pretend he is a member of a circus. David knew that he would have a better advantage of living there if he knew how to read Italian. On page 45, David sees a couple eating something. He knew that usually there was newspaper wrapped around the food, and when the couple threw it away, he checked and there was! He used this newspaper to teach himself to read
