Rizga later continues saying, “In her junior year, she became the go-to translator and advocate for her mother, her aunts, and for the other Latino kids at school” (Rizga 97). As a result of incorporating these two sentences, Rizga is showing that Maria is receiving an honest education due to the fact that she went from not speaking English at all, to being able to understand and translate complex sentences. Using John Taylor Gatto’s text “Against school” as basis of comparison to determine whether Maria’s education is true education or just schooling, it is clear that Maria is receiving an straightforward education. In Gatto’s text, on of necessities to receiving a good education would be making the children more independent. For instance, Gatto inserts an idea from Dr.Inglis that states, “…If children could be cloistered with other children, stripped of responsibility and independence…they would grow older, but never truly grow up” (Gatto 82). Gatto incorporated this quote into his article to show that just because a child is physically growing up, doesn’t mean that they are mentally maturing as well, showing that going to school doesn’t correlate with receiving an education, which is not the case for Maria. She’d soon be filling out college applications and had recently been elected Latino student club president” (Rizga 103). This specific scenario shows that Maria is receiving an education in the eyes of Gatto because in his text he claims, “We could encourage the best qualities of youthfulness- curiosity, adventure, resilience, the capacity for surprising insight…”(Gatto 80). This specific quote is saying that part if receiving an education is by instilling an academic sense of curiosity and adventure into the children, which in the case of Maria is college. Maria went from not knowing a word of English, to becoming the go-to translator in her class, to applying to colleges and becoming the Latino student club president. This shows adventure and curiosity because the more education Maria receives, the further and further she pushes herself to go. Due to this, using Gatto’s ideas as a scale, it is clear that Maria is receiving a genuine education, and not just
