This class made me realize how society has shaped me. I am a young Latina mother, born from immigrant parents,bi-cultural, bilingual, college student, wife, able body with many more privileges and disadvantages. The class made me have great conversations with my family, friends and even people I just meet. Gender is something people can not take out of the picture and is socially constructed and it impacts a lot of how people see you and think of you. This semester I was able to understand all the things and factors that make me the way I am. The stereotypes that people have about gender, sexuality, race, social status and many other factors that people are judged by. This class made me understand that my life is better then someone else in this world and that I should be proud of the privileges I have. It also made me think about the decisions I have made in the last years of my life.

My mother has always watched novelas (soup operas) where the women get in love get marry and are happy. My father loves to see drug cartel novelas. My parents have always told my siblings and I the roles of people in the world. I had to always take care of my siblings and do their chores. I cooked and did laundry. My brothers are the most disrespectful boys I know and that is because my brothers see my mom like she does not have authority. My father never allowed my older brother to touch a duty plates or had to take care of my siblings. Man in the media are never independent or showed doing “female” roles except if they have a gay personage. In the letter I wrote that they should have a luck at how they are treating my siblings and how they wish they could treat

I believe this is crucial because it is rare to find institutions where they specifically teach about women rights. Nonetheless, we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take liberal curriculums where gender studies is one of the majors offered for undergraduates. I believe these courses allow both males and females to be more open-minded and recognize that it is our responsibilities to constantly seek better changes. In one of my classes this year, we watched a TEDx clip of an active feminist. She said there were not enough female leaders because a lot of people still underestimate their abilities.…

One problem I learned from class, is that women are currently still face many issues that were once thought of as being resolved. Issues such as wage discrimination, job discrimination, sexualization, and violence are only a few of the many issues we are challenged with. Not only do women still deal with these issues but we also endure sexism on a day to day biases. These issues never came to my attention in my everyday life. However, through taking this class it made me socially aware of the issues that I was facing but was not conscious of.…

Being Mexican American I believed I had a bit of an unfair advantage taking this course. I was looking forward to learning more about my culture and myself but at the back of my mind I believed I would already know some of the material. I am very happy to say that I have learned a lot more than I expected. I have learned a lot about Hispanic cultures other than mine, politics, and economics, and many other topics but off all the things we covered in class the three that most stuck out to me were the early history of Latinos in the US, learning about privilege, and educational achievement of Latinos.…

Before taking this class, I didn’t know what to expect. A few friends recommended the class but gave little insight on what the class would be about. When I read the title and description of the class I believed that we would be a simple Black history class, but after taking this class, I learned that it was so much more. Before, I thought I had Blackness figured out seeing that I am a Black woman, but after taking Introduction to the Black Experience, I have learned that there is so much history and ideology I have yet to learn or hear about. More than anything, this class gave me the validation and confidence needed to express my opinions and embrace my Blackness.…

How would I describe this class? I would probably say without hesitation that this class is grueling, exhausting, and stressful (just kidding). Although, I would have to admit that somewhere in the back of my mind, I realize how valuable a class like this is. Nowadays, everywhere I look, people are glued to their phones or other devices; when I was in middle school before everyone had a smartphone, people actually read books in their free time. It is quite sad how many students of this generation will not pick up a book unless it is assigned to them.…

Before I took this class I was so ignorant about my African culture. I believe it was because I was not curious about my ancestors, nor did I learn about the culture in school. I watched television shows and still never questioned what stories they brought about Africa. The things I learned from African American women in history were memorable. My professor was able to explain and demonstrate the African American history from the beginning of 17th century till the 20th century in order to help me experience history second hand.…

Starting from the time a baby is born, he or she hears a series of different compliments. Infant boys often hear “What a strong guy” or “Look how smart you are!”. Essay #3: Gender Compare and Contrast Newly Married couples often have relationship issues relating to gender specific conversations and emotions which can lead to really bad and unhealthy relationships. Luckily there are guidance counselors to solve these problems. But what advice should these counselors give to their clients and what articles would be best suited for situations such as these? There are 2 really informative essays I have read, “His Talk, Her Talk” by Joyce Maynard and “Man to Man, Woman to Woman” by Mark A. Sherman and Adelaide Haas, that would be best to share with couples all over the world. “His Talk, Her Talk” by Joyce Maynard is based on the authors own personal experience with how the conversations between male and…
