Personal Narrative: I Am A Very Complex Learner

Improved Essays
I believe I am a very complex learner. After reviewing Gardener’s multiple intelligence theory and the field dependence/ independence, I would say I am a visual/special, musical, and field dependent learner. I am very interested in seeing the whole picture before working on the parts. Understanding my goal allows me to focus on completing my tasks. I love using pictures, images, and other visual ques to understand a concept. When solving math problems, I normally go straight into drawing a picture as my strategy. Music is a major part of me. In elementary school, I would create songs to remember how to spell my spelling words. These few examples are what lead me to believe I am these multiple intelligences. I feel my math skills are not up to par. Working with numbers and equations tend to frustrate me easily and I give up if I do not understand/ get the correct answer right away. Computations have always been a struggle for me as a learner. To focus on computations is not the best way for me to learn. Anxiety begins to take over and no learning is normally reached. This is my weakest intelligence. The verbal/ linguistic intelligence is always hit or miss with me. I am able to write down my notes and review them, but I rarely retain the information. I tend to spend most of my time copying what I need instead of listening and understanding content. If material interests me, I will be perfect in this intelligence. If content does not connect to me in any way, I am unable to fully grasp a concept by just reading and writing about it. These were the intelligences that do not relate to me as a learner. Field independent learners are the opposite of field dependent learners. I do not mind if a teacher ends off track to inform us of events. I also like to collaborate in the classroom. Working alone is nice majority of the time, but I am a people person and enjoy creating relationships. This is why I am not a field independent learner. During my analysis I have learned I am a very active learner. I enjoy using groups, images, music, and kinesthetic ways to learn content; which connects directly to field- dependent learning. I am very pleased to know what type of learner I am and how to incorporate most (if not all) multiple intelligences in my lessons. It is important to teach in a way that reaches all your students. Understanding myself as a learner allows me to understand my students as

Semester of Learning Experiences People most always say, “ Learn from you mistakes and achievements.” I would definitely conclude that is exactly what I’ve done this first semester of college. There are many times that I wanted to simply curl into a ball because of all the newness and unfamiliarity. At times I found myself doing just that, but realizing that I needed to toughen up burst from my comfort zone. I can say sleeping through your classes never the best choice, not going just because you find it too easy, missing a class just to write a paper for another class, and differentiating between minimal and highly important status of choices.…

Since starting high school, my interest in classroom learning had dropped quite significantly. I felt like grades were just a game, and that I should be out in the world learning things I deemed "practical life skills." My senior year I was able to mentor in a classroom of fourth graders for one period, ever other day. I took the class thinking it would be an easy and fun way to spend an hour an a half.…

This type of learner looks at the long-term goals/effects of their education, and presses on towards them no matter the apparent obstacles or shortcomings. 2. Two Personal Strengths as a Student: Even when not asked to, I seek out additional tools to help me study in a more effective, streamlined, and organized way as I embark on my learning journey. During this semester I have learned multiple things in my class GSW 1110, I learned the skills to research, write, using correct grammar and syntax, as well as setting goals to improve my skills as a writer. Through class exercises and writing the different types of papers, I was able to learn those skills. Skills such as having better vocabulary by using a few new words. Another goal is having a better flow throughout the essay by not going into detail about information that does not need to go into depth. A few more goals are better planning of ways to set up an essay and having credible sources and more information about sources.…

What I learned about myself is that I have potential for being a global manager. Looking over the questions, I tend to lack in my experiences more than my actual skills. What I’ve learned is that I can adapt quick and connect with people easily, but I don’t have many experiences in it. To widen my range of experiences I would most likely have to travel more and emerge myself directly into new cultures. I would also have to study different languages a bit more for that is an area I very much lack in.…

Learning Plan Audit Creating a learning plan was a challenging task for me. Having challenged my third year practicum, I missed out on some practice in identifying attainable and timely goals. The initial version of my learning plan was very vague, which made it more difficult for me to focus on specific tasks during the first half of my placement. However, at the midpoint meeting, my supervisor and I reviewed my learning plan and made key changes that ultimately helped me focus my learning experience. In this paper I will reflect on and discuss my initial learning plan and address the changes that need to be made to insure my success during my practicum.…

In the past, my educational experience relied heavily on being present five days out of the week and listening to an hour to an hour and a half lectures. Reviews were abundant during lectures causing me to learn at a decreased pace. Stopping became commonplace so everyone had a chance to catch up in their notes or schoolwork declining the already diminishing pace. I was, usually, barred from continuing ahead due to teachers wanting the students all on the same page or because the next lesson wasn’t even decided yet. This all (thankfully) changed with my transferring of high school to college.…

I completed my ten-hour class observation at the private school Georgia Military Prep. The Georgia Military Prep School is located on Georgia Military College’s main campus in Milledgeville. At GMC prep I observed Ms. Jennifer Spencer's advanced eighth grade math class. Ms. Spencer has a decidedly pleasant air about her, a quick smile, and a brisk step that belies her ‘let us get the job done’ type attitude. On my first day observing her class, I soon gathered that Ms. Spencer always has a goal in mind when she sets foot in the classroom.…
