Currently I’m a student at Highline College in Des Moines Washington. I’m currently pursuing a general education AA with the intent to transfuse UW and study in the psychology program.
From young age I was my father’s care taker which forced me to graduate with a GED. After his death and my own period of morning I decided that I wanted to continue to help stoke victims and their families through their struggles by being emotional and psychological support during their times of recover or even loss. While I absolutely love my current campus they don’t offer the necessary credentials I need in order to perseu opportunities in my desired career.
I do intend to study in the psychologically department however right now I’m toward between whether …show more content…
Most of my life I was around people who seemed to understand the way the brain works in such intricate detail and I found that fascinating. They concept of being able to help someone through the use of cognition is such a powerful tool yet it often times goes underappreciated and I hope that one day I’ll be able to help spread awareness of the different aspects of psychology.
The huge amount of field work that highline offers too their students is a big factor to me. Being able to go through my school and work hand and hand with some of the teachers and staff on campus and then get credit for it seems like it would be largely beneficial to me. While I understand that this is a competitive field getting in to the major on the UW campus would defiantly be worth the effort.
Well, seeing as I’m a student a highline collage the first thing I can say is that I’m been exposed to more types of people that I have in my entire life. One of my first classes on this campus was American Sign Language. I didn’t know exactly was I was getting in to but it opened my eyes to the fact that there is this entire world that lives alone side the hearing world that we just ignore. I think the most astounding thing I’ve ever experience happened about a week after I started taking classes in American Sign Language. It was about 5 in the morning and I was sitting at the bus stop reading a book about the history of Sign …show more content…
He let out a laugh and nodded before signing “thank you” and he help up a sign before walking away. I now know that sign meant “I Love you” and he was thanking my for taking the time to do was so few people do in America and learn Sign language. This opened the door to so many more wonderful experiences I’ve had within the Deaf Culture and if I have my way I plan to continue my life as part of the deaf community. I currently attend a multitude Deaf friendly events. This is just one of the many types of cultures I’ve been exposed to since I’ve been part of highline.
I’d have to say that my dyslexia is probably the most difficult thing I face when it comes to my academics. I’ve allowed my learning disability stand in my way but it does take a bit of extra effort to make sure I’m taking focused and on track with my classes. I always try to take the extra step to create a healthy line of commutation with my instructors and take advantage of as many resources that I can on campus in order to make sure I’ve put myself in the best position possible in order to
